They also wrapped our box in plastic to preserve the freshness for serving at a party the next day...and the German chocolate cupcakes were delicious. “We were driving through from Waterloo to Minneapolis, stopped in Mason City to visit family and looked at Google maps for restaurants. Happy Donkey came up. Only one other table with customers. We were skeptical. Service was friendly, establishment was clean, food was delicious (donkey enchilada was my choice and couldn't have been happier)!! Worth stopping!! 5/5!!!”

“They kicked out our party of 8 because we pushed together tables near the billiards table. Very unprofessional, discourteous and downright rude. These distasteful actions were performed by the owner herself. We have been here numerous times before and love food. However we will not be returning.”

“We have been to the Clear Lake and Rockwell locations!!! We love the ice cream and the staff is great. Clear Lake's addition of the hot dogs is great too. We tried one with cream cheese and it was really good. Thanks for the great service and the variety of flavors.”

“Pros- Well laid out and spacious seating area. Good selection of flavored and higher IBU beers. Staff is always friendly. Non-beer/non alcoholic options available. Free pretzels.

Cons- The staff and the entertainment must be deaf, even when seated toward the back the music is too loud to carry on a conversation with your table mates. I am not a fan of flavored or high IBU beers and the American Wheat is getting a little long in the tooth, maybe replace it with an American Style Lager?”

“Let’s do this by the numbers- 35- The number of years I’ve been working in restaurants. 20- The number of years my friend has been trying to get me to Mason City to try her favorite hometown restaurant. 4- The number of hours we drove, round trip to finally get me to The Northwestern. No other reason to come to Mason, just this restaurant. 1- The ranking of this filet versus any steak I’ve ever had in a restaurant in my life. Perfectly seasoned, melt in your mouth texture, and prompt, no nonsense service. For the sake of clarity and with no trace of hyperbole: this is the best steak I’ve ever had in a restaurant.”

“Love the Vulcan!! The dumplings are sooooo goood - the tempura shrimp is delicious. The coconut shrimp is one of my favorite meals. I haven’t had a bad thing to eat here and the sauces they make are delicious!”

“We had the ribeye steak tonight and it melted in your mouth! It was delicious and seasoned just right. The salad was huge and the fries were plentiful. I couldn’t eat all the salad or fries as I wanted the steak more! Hats off to the cook! We will return.”
