“The Moscow Alehouse is definitely an institution in Moscow. It has the feel of a longtime local gathering place, with a big raised wooden patio overlooking the parking lot. There are plenty of tables and umbrellas outside, and on a warm summer day it’s a great place to sit and enjoy the weather.

As the author of The Grant Colson Thriller Series novels, I travel extensively researching the real places that inspire my stories. I always pay attention to restaurants and pubs that function as genuine social gathering places, and the Moscow Alehouse clearly fits that description.

When you walk inside, there’s a server station immediately near the entrance. Straight ahead are larger tables that can accommodate groups of around eight. Turn left and there are numerous booths, plus plenty of seating around the bar. The open exhibition-style kitchen also lets you see some of what’s happening behind the scenes.

The centerpiece is a massive communal table with barstools that looks like it could easily accommodate 20 or more people. Between that, the booths, the bar, and the patio, this place is obviously designed for friends and groups to gather. They also have trivia every Wednesday, which fits the social atmosphere perfectly.

The beer selection is impressive, with more than 20 choices on tap when I visited. I ordered a porter, and it was really good. Above the bar is a huge collection of glass beer mugs displayed along the ceiling, which is a fun detail and gives the room even more character.

For dinner, I tried the huckleberry burger, which I’d heard about before coming here. It was super tasty and definitely lived up to the recommendation.

The interior was almost chilly during my visit, which actually made me laugh because it was around 90 degrees outside. I was glad I had my hoodie. Everyone outside was enjoying the last of the warm summer weather while the inside already felt like jacket season.

As a romance novelist, I also appreciate places built around people getting together and having a good time. The Moscow Alehouse has that comfortable college-town energy, whether you’re sitting outside with friends, gathering around the huge communal table, watching the kitchen, or spending the evening over burgers and beer.

The staff was super nice, the food was excellent, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. It’s easy to see why the Moscow Alehouse has become such a local institution.

One annoyance: they charge 3.25% more if you pay by card.“
