Bar Sotano has really good food and great mezcal. The reason for one-star is because the restaurant tries to scam you:We were charged a 20% service fee but wasn't told this was already on the bill. I then tipped 20%, given I didn't know it was included. And now when I checked my credit card statement the restaurant charged me even more than what I signed for. The total "tip" that they have charged is 47.25%. I'm challenging the additional charge that they layered on top of my signed bill.Buyer beware if you go here. Save you're receipts and double check with your bank.

We Ordered the chefs special 6 course and we were simply disappointed. The course included these bite sized samples of Raw Salmon in a blood orange sauce, Beef Tongue taco, liver mousse on a tostada/ cracker, Quail with some green salsa etc. All Super cheap ingredients right? The placed is crazy expensive and I can’t say the food was delicious. The drinks and ceviche were honestly good though.

One of my favorite aspects of Bar Sótano is the service. Went in without doing much research and it went beyond my expectations. It is intimate, cozy, and even though it’s in a “basement” it did NOT feel claustrophobic. There were patrons celebrating a birthday, friends hanging out, couples being romantic, and some sitting at the bar just chatting. The food top-notch. Chef Jackie’s menu is excellent! Highly recommend the roasted bone marrow, oysters, paella, and of course either the flan or tres leches.Tequila and mezcal options are excellent. Try a flight of either on your first visit (or any visit). I lean more tequila and was happy Fortaleza is on the menu.Keep in mind that there is a mandatory 20% service charge regardless of party size. I think this is a great way to go and make sure staff isn’t “trying” for tips. Consequently making it a better experience for the patron and a better working environment for the staff. A win-win.

Decided to try this spot after seeing a reel showcasing it. We were disappointed. The best part were the Mezcal Old Fashioned drinks and the oysters. The ceviche lacked flavor, the pork belly tacos were good, but not $8 each worth. My friend ordered than panburgesa, which was delayed because the patties were thawing. This means they're not using fresh meat. It was dry and tasteless. To top it off, they automatically add a 20% gratuity, which may explain why our server was so slow and inattentive. We had to call him over to take our order after 20 minutes of waiting for him.Overall, I'd go back but only for drinks.

Bar Sotano definitely lived up to expectations. Food and drink were both great. Wed has happy hour all day, which was unexpected. The mezcal old fashioned was one of the best cocktails I’ve had all year, even compared to After (while controlling for very expensive ingredients). Highly recommend the Paella as well! Plan to regularly come back.Parking: It’s downtown, it’s badKid-friendliness: Not kid friendly, bar/lounge vibes

My friends and I went here after work to get a quick bite to eat and a few drinks before heading home. The ambience when you first walk in is welcoming and very chill! We went on a Thursday so we were able to enjoy the atmosphere and decor before it got too busy. Everyone was attentive and friendly! Our waitress was Sophia and she went above and beyond. She made sure we had everything we needed, gave great suggestions on which foods we should try & even taught us a new technique for when we took our shots! The drinks and food were so delicious, and I honestly can’t wait to go back! If I could I would give this bar 10 stars, 10 out of 10 definitely recommend!

Ambiance was vibrant and lively with a semi exposed kitchen. Service was great and the staff were friendly. The food was above average. My favorite dish was the chilaquiles. Packed with lots of flavor

I was here for Wednesday happy hour. I walked in & confirmed my reservation & requested the bar. However, the older women at the host stand , probably a manager was not hospitable. She hasnt smiled since the cold war, very stern. How about a smile & be warm & welcoming & then politely say no to my request. The server was good & service was great. The bussers did a great job too..All the happy hour food was just phenomenal, very flavorful. Wasn't a fan of the Brussel Sprouts though. The happy hour cocktail was pretty good.I take one star down as the manager was rude & auto grat policy due to which Mr Bayless gives his employees a fixed salary. I will come back for the food & drinks.
