I wrote them a long direct email with feedback and it’s been unacknowledged since July 4. Spent around $450 here for 2 for my 40th birthday. Do not recommend. Bad service.

Had the chahan and it tasted bland, which is mostly fine except I noticed that it started getting really gritty, like there was sand in it. I didn't know if I was just confusing burnt bits with sand, but once I hit the bottom of the bowl I realized it was very cracked and looked nothing like the bottom of my friend's bowl. So I'm pretty sure all the black gritty bits was me eating the stone bowl that had cracked away :(

I made a reservation at Momotaro for our first trip to Chicago, which was also a celebration of our wedding anniversary. We were really looking forward to a special evening and booked the sushi counter through OpenTable (Sushi Counter • Counter seating for 2 on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 6:15 pm).
We arrived on time and checked in at the front desk, where a staff member in front of a white monitor confirmed our reservation. A waiter then led us to our seats. After a 9-hour drive to Chicago, both my wife and I were exhausted.
As the waiter was about to guide us to our seats, my wife naturally walked ahead toward the sushi counter. The hallway was narrow and busy, so it felt like the natural thing to do. However, the waiter, watching this, made a mocking gesture—as if surprised or annoyed by her action. It came off as unnecessary and disrespectful, and my wife was visibly embarrassed.
That one moment completely changed the mood. What was supposed to be a joyful anniversary dinner turned awkward and uncomfortable. We did our best to enjoy the sushi, which was excellent, but the tone had already been set.
I understand that misunderstandings happen and that walking ahead might be against their usual procedure. But still—was that mocking gesture really necessary?
To be clear, our server during the meal was wonderful. But the front desk staff member managing reservations (the one in front of the white monitor) needs proper training in hospitality.
We left disappointed on a day that meant a lot to us. I sincerely hope this kind of experience doesn’t happen to anyone else. I will be posting the same review on OpenTable as well.

I came back to Momotaro after about three years, excited to revisit a place I remembered fondly. The last time I was here, the chili-crusted octopus was unforgettable—perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. This time, unfortunately, it missed the mark. The octopus was tough to cut through and lacked the bold seasoning I loved before. The salad it came with also felt uninspired and didn’t add much to the dish.
We also tried the yakitori, and there was something about the coating or texture that made it seem almost breaded, which didn’t work for me. I’m used to yakitori being simply grilled with that smoky, juicy flavor, and this version just didn’t capture that.
On the positive side, my friends really enjoyed their sushi, and I have to say the chicken liver was a highlight for me—it was delicious.
Service, however, was excellent. Our waitress was incredibly friendly, attentive, and did a fantastic job explaining the menu to us. The entire staff was helpful and welcoming, which really stood out.
Overall, while there were some enjoyable elements, this visit didn’t live up to my previous experience. I hope to see the dishes return to the quality I remember.
