Arrived for brunch soon after they opened. Was ushered to a nice booth. Waitress was incredibly friendly and on point. Enthusiastically recommended some dishes and really sold the food. The oxtail were tender, the grits creamy and mouthwatering, the fish was nicely seasoned, the chicken was hitting. I was a little apprehensive about eating here after reading the mixed reviews, but the food slapped. My only complaint is that they don't serve coffee. What is brunch without a cup of coffee? Waitress said she would talk to owner and try to convince. Whoever the owner is, listen to your employees. How hard is it to offer coffee?

I’ve been here twice and both times my food was good (I ordered the fried catfish with Mac and cheese and yams) the service was good and the atmosphere (‘90s/‘00 R&B and current music playing)was a 10/10. The watermelon shot was fye! (I highly recommend getting this). Reserve a table ahead of time.

The wait for a table wasn't extremely unbearable, however the wait to be serviced at our table was ridiculous. In addition, the wait for our food to be served was astronomical for a party of 3, only 2 ordered and the wait was around 1.5hr before we could finally eat, after which food was served without silverware causing an additional wait. We waited this amount of time for 3 small tacos, a small bowl of bland macaroni and cheese, a dry Ceasars salad, small square of cornbread and a plate of bland pasta. The food is not unbearable however the service is deplorable. Shortly after being served, as we were eating we were give the check, minutes after we were approached while forks were in hand and asked if we were ready to pay as the restaurant was now closed. Displeasing experience to say the least, and to add insult to injury a mandatory and completely underserved gratuity of 20% was added to the bill. I will not be returning ever. Subpar food, absolutely inattentive and poor service.

Not a good experience we had over 200 dollars worth of food with no seasoning our reservation was for 3:30 we would have been seated but they had no tables ready to accommodate brunch was over at 4 we asked could we still take advantage of the brunch due to their error we were not seated til 4:15 waitress was like nope o well sorry buffalo wings terrible greens cold terrible Mac and cheese dry over cooked 5.00 cold cornbread trash jerk tacos the worsttt my coworker warned me but I tried to support terrible experience

The location and atmosphere is nice. My husband and I are visiting Chicago, in town for an event and heard of this black own soul food spot and wanted to patronize. Our experience was terrible. We had reservations but when we got there had to wait 15 minutes. Normally I dont mind waiting that time but I watched a party of the same size without reservations get seated before me. I said something to the hostess and she apologized and got us seated at the bar about 5 minutes later. It was only one woman working the bar. The lady sitting next to me warned me and said she had been waiting on her food for over an hour. That shouldve been my warning sign to walk away but we stayed to get our own experience.
When the bartender came we asked for water. I asked if the kitchen was backed up and if it would really take an hour for food, as we are traveling back home tonight. She said, no it will not and the other ladys experience was due to a kitchen mix up. Well 15 mins after ordering. I asked for that same water I asked for to start with and she got it. About another 15 mins my food came out (not my husbands). My husbands came shortly after (only 30 min wait which we felt was reasonable), BUT, our appetizer we ordered never came. My husband told the waitress we never got the appetizers then they came out.
The food was just okay. The fish was overcooked and taste like it was fried in old cooking oil. The soul rolls had the same old oil after taste. As I was eating, I asked the bartender for more water, to go box, and check and she never gave it to me. Making me wait 10/15 to pay is crazy! She started doin other stuff and forgot. I asked another woman who cam behind the bar and she literally looked at me and walked to the back. This is when I got pissed and was really ready to go. It took a ask of a third person to get water which I really needed I may add. The third lady saw I was frustrated at that point, so much so that I was ready to leave immediately and she got my box and check although she wasnt my waitress. The man next to me (different from when I first came) was complaining because he asked for sauce for his tacos 3x and was waiting to eat them. He was still waiting when I left and it was well over ten minutes. I do not like speaking poorly about any establishment but my experience was unacceptable and honestly shocking. 20% gratuity was automatically added which I dont mind but they didng give me 20% service. I recommend the owner pay closer attention to the service their staff provide because tonight was complete trash and not worth my time or money. The poor service and lact of regard for customer service prompted this review.

So, to start we arrived at 6pm and was told it was an 35 min wait. At 7:15pm, I asked about seating and to the manager’s frustration about my asking. She sat us right under the d.j. We were seated and then waited on by Shay( very poor service)! It took her another 30 mins to take our order, she never came to check on us. Everyone around us received their food before us, who was seated after. Our to go order( which was incomplete), arrived first then 40 min later our dine in. The food was good overall, but distasteful due to the poor performance by the restaurant staff!

First time going for an anniversary dinner, wasnt the best experience. Couldn't order the ribeye steak or the potato salad because they were out. We received our food BEFORE our drinks, which was weird. Server didnt do a two bite check, was just kinda aloof and goofing around the tables. The food and drinks were just okay. But the place is a vibe, and easy to get to at least.
