I’ve been to Malaysia, where I had some of the best food in all of SE Asia. I would not consider this specifically Malaysian. In addition, the food did not taste fresh, we waited about 30 minutes for our order to be taken.

Do not come here expecting authentic Malaysian food. The quality of the cooking is way below average and would not satisfy anyone who is familiar with real Malaysian food. We ordered a roti, which was definitely from frozen packages of roti and not made fresh. The sambal shrimp was super salty and sweet at the same time and not spicy, the petai beans were squishy and not fresh. The kangkung was so oily with no wok-hei. The pineapple fried rice used a pineapple serving shell that was probably reused 100 times, cuz there was mold growing at the base of the pineapple shell. The char kawiteao and hainan chicken were probably the only truly edible items serviced that night. If you have true Asian/malaysian taste requirements, do yourself a favor, and stay far far away from this place

The restaurant is nice and roomy with bar area and tv monitors to watch a game.
Overall it was an underwhelming experience with a waiter who wasn't interested in taking our order and eventually the kitchen messed up our order so we never had 1 dish. It's overpriced for the experience. I will not recommend this place to anyone.
We have a few restrictions like vegetarian and nut allergy which was taken into consideration by the waiter.
We ordered a few appetizers like the parotta and spring rolls and a tofu soup. A basil fried rice for which we asked to add pineapple ($5) addition and was not seared/cooked properly. The rice was fine overall.

The best Malaysian in the city !
I’m seeing two fake reviews by people that copied and paste their reviews with each other claiming this is Singaporean— it is not! lol
Either they are competitors trying to hurt the restraurant or just two people that have no idea what good food is lol.
Ignore these haters who lie I’ve had Malaysian food all over the world and Indonesian food this is much better than they describe

Absolutely terrible service. I came in today with a simple order nasi lemak, a drink, and a dessert. I chose to pay before the food, because ive had past issues with my card that I was wary about. The server (Kristina/Cristina) had a disgusting attitude and she repeatedly rolled her eyes at me multiple times, grunted after i gave a tip (wasnt good enough for her), I asked for a mango sticky rice and she said no bc the price wasnt the same and because she would be yelled at by the chef.. so I asked for a coconut pudding bc they didnt have the desert option I had asked for.. she offered a refund and I said it was fine. Later on, the chef came out and wanted me to pay for the pudding and get a refund. I had no issue with this but Kristina yelled at me for pushing my phone down “aggressively” to pay. I was pushing my phone down bc i have had issues with apple pay. The male server was incredibly nice.

Hands down best Malaysian food I’ve had outside of Malaysia! We ordered the nasi lemak beef rendang and the chee cheong fun. The aroma and taste is so authentic, couldn't help but dig right in! Only thing is no utensils were given in the delivery order.

The staff and location are great but unfortunately my food just wasn't very good. The kapitan chicken was decent but my mee goreng was pretty bad

Really great food and service! Not a super busy night. Will definitely go back, especially since it's so close to the movie theater.
Serai and Kapitan are the same restaurant and I wish I could give a higher rating.
As a Singaporean who frequent to Malaysia for their food, this is not authentic to the taste of Malaysia. It’s also not affordable :/
What we got:
1. Char Kway Tiao 19USD
2. Hokkien Char Mee 17USD
3. Sambal chilli (didn’t know they charge that, it’s good tho!)
We wanted to order Teh Tarik but after trying the food we decided not to pay another 8USD. There are some Asian restaurants we would go back to in Chicago but sadly, this didn’t make it to the list. Great environment and service staff tho!

FYI - Kapitan & Serai are the same shop.
As a Singaporean, I had to come by here to try the food.
However, I left disappointed. This isn’t a good representation of how our food tastes. It can be better. The texture, taste and consistency of the dishes weren’t great.
Hokkien Char Mee and Char kway Teow were decent and edible. You can enjoy a decent meal here but don’t leave thinking this is how Singaporean/Malaysian food tastes. It is and can be way better.
That being said, didn’t try the other dishes that were recommended so unfortunately can’t weigh in on those.
Staff were friendly and kind and it was a nice atmosphere with plenty of seats and space.

Wow Kapitan was so good! Went for the first time tonight and absolutely loved it. Had the Kapitan chicken - super flavorful and great portion size. Also got the Bubur Chacha for dessert and it was tremendous. Friend had the roti appetizer which was unreal. Full bar service and great for groups. Good prices. Truly a great experience and will be returning soon
