The truffle beef sandwich and fries are always incredible. Obsessed with this place. And they are always so nice behind the counter, my order seemed to have cancelled or not gone through, and the employees went out of their way to make my food fast and make it up to me, even thought it wasn’t their fault at all, it could have been a bank issue for all we know.

Went to Matt Bakes to try out their new cheese fries and their new scallion pizza! The food was great, came out in a timely manner and the portions were perfect for sharing between four people. The scallion pizza had the perfect amount of toppings, and usually I don’t like pork floss but I found the amount on this order to be particularly tasteful. Service was great too :)

Excellent breakfast sandwich. Probably the best one in the city, and really nice that you can modify it exactly how you want. Definitely the most slept on.

The person at the front had amazing customer service!
“554” was very disappointing. The chasiu is dry, the rice is not Chinese rice. The “crab soup dumpling” had no soup and tasted identical to pork. Don’t gaslight me that this is crab, please.

Such a hidden gem and the food was delicious. Got the waygu and char siu (amazing and flavorful), though as pictured neither came on the pineapple bun, which was a bummer because I feel like both sandwiches would have been taken to the next level. Regardless, as presented, they were still both a 10/10 and incredibly flavorful, especially the char siu. Ordering was simple and I love that the sandwiches can be customized. The coleslaw was probably the best I ever had because the citrus flavor really caught me off guard.
I gave the service three stars only because I wish I wasn't caught off guard by the lack of pineapple bun (was told later on after receiving the food that it wasn't done baking, which is a good sign honestly). It honestly wasn't a big deal because had I known the sandwiches would be served on toast, I probably would have skipped and missed out on an amazing food experience. I still think restaurants should be upfront with that kind of info though, especially if your offerings are presented with a main option that you don't have.
Despite the lack of pineapple bun, I will be back and I highly recommend this place. You get a lot of good food for your money. Idk if Matt is the one that's back there making everything, but he's putting in work.

Food was delicious! You order on a kiosk and wait for your food. The wait wasn’t too long, and the prices seemed reasonable. This is located inside an Asian food store next to other Asian restaurants. My only complaint is the coleslaw; it didn’t have much flavor.

I've been wanting to visit this place for awhile now and finally went and it didn't disappoint. The sushi was delicious and I picked up a few items and snacks
This is a nice place with the marked and the food area giving you plenty of choices but Matt bakes is a must try first!

Honestly the breakfast sandwich here is better than the one at Kasama. It has so much more flavor and ofc no wait. Comes with plantain chips/ coleslaw and a drink too! Would recommend this place to anyone visiting Chicago :)

I had high hopes for Matt Bake after hearing all the buzz, but honestly, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. The biggest red flag was the 15% tax added on top of everything — way above the usual sales tax, especially when other food stalls in the same market don’t do this. It felt excessive and unnecessary.
As for the food, the Pineapple Bun Chicken Sandwich was a miss. The chicken was way too overpowering in both flavor and sweetness, and pairing that with an already sweet pineapple bun just made it a sugar overload. The balance was completely off.
The only standout was the Egg Sando — simple, tasty, and well-executed. If I ever return, it would probably be just for that.
In the end, Matt Bake looks cool and has some creative ideas, but it doesn’t justify the pricing or the hype. There are better spots in the area that don’t tack on hidden charges and serve better-balanced food.

As someone who partially grew up in Hong Kong and the US, this a great example of where my two worlds meet. Such a simple idea yet kind of brilliant to make sandwiches with our favorite Hong Kong proteins and pineapple buns with an American twist.
Great job. My only request; make the pineapple crust on the bun a little thicker to help the sweet buttery taste shine a little brighter alongside the strong savory additions of the sandwich!
Still a great sandwich and definitely worth the try!! :)

Char siu & fried egg sandwich is super tasty and filling!
I recommend this and would come back again to order. Their other items on the menu and from the bakery are awesome too.

The best spot in that food hall. Unique style and delicious varieties. The 554 is my go to and occasionally frequent the pastries.

If you end up getting a Smashed Waugh Burger, don’t get it with that flaky bun—it’ll fall apart and piss you off every time you take a bite.
