This is a review for Nightshade. To get there, you go to the back of Moonflower then through the unmarked black door to the right and downstairs. There are two rooms - one for music/ dancing and the other with small tables for drinks. The night I went the music room wasn’t open (guess you have to know when it’s club night). A bit bare bones in terms of furniture/ atmosphere. But, the drinks were EXCELLENT. Not a huge selection but the table I was with ordered about four different drinks from the specialty menu and they were all better than I was expecting.
Though the downstairs is designed for drinking I saw people eating from the menu upstairs so apparently you can do that.

Comfortable vibes. Serious craft cocktails. Thoughtful food menu. And great prices. What more can you want?
Try the Late Bloomer cocktail, it’s sooo good.
They even host fun events like live music, Oktoberfest, and DnD nights. Check this place out if you haven’t already.

Love the vibe and all but I miss the old Hops and Barely that it previously was. Food was Eh... Drinks too expensive for the size. I get it it's a cocktail bar but dang. Also they charged my card twice and a week later and they're still holding 100$ in my checking account hostage. I definitely would check out other spots in the area with better prices and bigger drinks.

We also visited a Nightshade, both with great cocktails. Very welcoming and beautiful bars! The folks who work here are just wonderful!

Great local spot that gives you a true victim place but the staff is bare bones, so sit at the bar for faster service. Jess was great and we enjoyed our nightcap.

We recently moved to Portage Park and needed to find some new cocktail spots. We’re used to paying $16+ for cocktails in Lakeview. Moonflower has been a wonderful find! Their happy hour and food specials are a great deal, but even their regularly priced drinks are superb. You can’t go to many places in the city and pay only $11 for a high quality hand crafted cocktail like you can here. The staff is extremely friendly and the place is just a good vibe all around with good music. We’ll continue stopping at Moonflower at least once a week!

Coffee. Washed. Malört. Don’t think to much about it. Enjoy the strange flavor of a Chicago classic gassed up by the oils of a perfectly brewed (what I can only imagine is a full city roast) cup-of-joe, then filtered back down to give you the silky feeling of a washed drink, the Nordic root notes of an oft-misunderstood liquor, and the confidence of a bit of caffeine. This is the barstool pep drink of connaisseurs.

I had been wanting to try Moonflower again after Funeral Potatoes starting operating their kitchen. I went in for a carry out food order and everything was fantastic. I ordered a drink while I waited and it was very enjoyable. We ordered the burger, brussel sprouts, and hot crab rangoon dip - so delicious. We had to order one burger gluten free and they were careful to make it celiac safe, including packaging it separately.
I do wish that Moonflower was able to welcome families at least during early evening hours, but they are a 21+ business inside (kids can be on the patio when it’s open).
Dietary restrictions: Made the burger gluten free/celiac safe

The stairs to the "speakeasy" weren't lit and were super dark and had a steep downward angle. 1 strong drink didn't want to chance it. One of the employees offered to help but once busy didn't know if he'd be available. Restrooms weren't well marked. WAY TOO PRICEY FOR THE HOOD. More of a see be seen joint for millennials who live at home or w several roomies and are willing to splurge. Went when they were 1st opened and their drinks weren't as good as Hala Kahiki. Might give them another
try....parking was difficult. WATCH OUT FOR HIGH CURBS!

When I first moved to Chicago in 2012 and was in grad school, I found a neighborhood bar that helped get me through grad school.
I thought I would never find another true Chicago neighborhood bar that serves quality, affordable drinks, has really good food, a great team, and a dope atmosphere.
Moonflower is it. They have the best happy hour I have seen in Chicago. Everyone here is cool, place is definitely a gem on Chicago’s NW side, highly recommend!

Located in Portage Park, I don’t know that one goes here for food with limited menu and all. But cocktails more than make up for its lack of food options. Night shade in the basement offers even better cocktail menu. Great place to hangout or take someone on a date.
