I've enjoyed Shaw's for more than 40 years when visiting Chicago. Food is great but pricey. Service is usually very good. This time service was not so good. Waitress took our order and basically disappeared until time for the check. We snagged another member of staff for drink refills. Someone else grabbed our dishes that someone in our party was still eating on. We even went early to beat the later evening rush. Sad to see that service was not up to past experiences. We made the reservation noting that it was my wife's birthday. That was acknowledged when checking in but she didn't get recognition from the waitress or even a birthday mint or cookie let alone a cupcake with a candle.

Overall we had a nice experience. The location is great. It's in the heart of the city on a tree lined street. The room is very large. Seating is available in the connecting bar as well. Dark red booths and vintage tile create a perfect atmosphere lost in time. The menu was extensive and the food was exceptional. We loved everything. Service started out great but somewhere along the way, our server lost his way. We had to ask for him on 4 separate occasions. I asked for my scallops to be extra seared and they were only seared on one side. At the end of our evening, I think my server may have forgotten to note this. We ordered dessert but mine never arrived. Our server was nowhere to be found to ask about it. I asked for the check to be dropped when the desserts arrived but it wasn't. After a long wait once my friend finished her dessert, the server appeared and asked if we wanted the check. My friend brought up that my dessert never arrived, he said I can get that for you now. No apology for the mistake. I told him it was ok we just wanted to close out our check I'm not sure what happened along the way. Our server remained very nice and pleasant but he was a little forgetful and missing quite a bit. They did take our 2 cocktails off the bill so that was very much appreciated but not expected. I still love Shaws and will return again. I think the food was fantastic and our guy just had an off night.
