Sun Wah BBQ is a Chicago classic, especially if you’re going for their famous Peking duck dinner. The experience feels a little old-school in the best way — lively dining room, efficient service, and the duck carved tableside. The skin was crispy and flavorful, the meat tender and juicy, and the whole meal comes with bao, rice, and soup that makes it feel like a full feast rather than just a single dish. Their barbecue meats hanging in the window are also worth trying. It’s not trendy or flashy, but it’s consistently satisfying and perfect for a group dinner when you want something hearty and memorable.

The Peking duck was delicious. Meat was juicy and tender. The rest of the dishes tasted delicious as well. However, the service was disappointing. We waited a long time before someone came by to take our order. The servers were also a bit rude and seemed impatient and angry when taking our order. If you want good food and don’t mind the service, then this is the place.

The most iconic spot for Peking duck in Chicago! This renowned restaurant lived up to the expectation. The restaurant had plenty of seating, but keep in mind, you have to call ahead to reserve the whole duck dinner. The base price is $70, and you’ll definitely need six extra bao buns, which is another $4.50. It is intended for three to four people, and we thought it was a decent portion. Your food is brought out almost instantly, and they slice the duck tableside. The special thing about this Peking duck meal is that no part of the duck is wasted. The duck meat was so tender, smoky, and juicy. The skin was crisped nicely and provided a good textural contrast with the succulent meat. The roasted duck comes with thinly sliced carrots, green onions, radish, and a sweet, tart sauce, which all pair perfectly. The bao buns were steaming hot and pillowy soft. Putting together all the ingredients resulted in a grandiose symphony of flavors. The second course was the duck fried rice. It was seasoned well but did not seem to have too much duck meat. Lastly, we finished our meal with a soothing soup made from the duck carcass. The broth was rich and reinvigorating. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Chicago, Sun Wah is a must visit!

A solid option in Uptown known for its peking duck. I went with a friend around 5 pm on a Friday. We were seated immediately but the restaurant did begin to fill up over the course of our meal. The restaurant's interior is nothing to write home about but the duck was absolutely divine. The duck dinner came with bao, soup, fried rice, and vegetables. We definitely could have used more bao (full disclosure: we didn't ask, so maybe they would've given it to us). The duck came out immediately (and I mean IMMEDIATELY), so we were in and out within an hour. Not a cheap dining option, but it was fast and delicious!

Worst service, no patience when we asked for hot water. The servant almost slamed the cups on our table to vent her anger. We did not know where the arrogance came from…
And you will notice they treat customers very differently. If you speak Mandarin here, you would know…

We ordered the $70 Peking duck dinner, which the server described as a “secret menu” item, despite the fact that nearly every table appeared to be ordering it. The meal begins with a whole duck carved tableside, followed by duck bone soup and duck fried rice.
The duck itself was excellent, well roasted and flavorful. However, a significant amount of meat remained on the carcass, which was never returned or incorporated into the subsequent courses. The duck bone soup was underwhelming and lacked depth, leading me to doubt it was made from our actual duck. The duck fried rice was the most disappointing component, served lukewarm, underseasoned, and lacking any wok hei. The rice was oddly al dente, suggesting it was prepared in large batches and held warm to accommodate the high demand of this so called secret item.
Overall, the experience felt more like a revenue driven offering than a thoughtfully executed prix fixe. The value simply was not there. I have had far superior Peking duck meals in Chinatown that included freshly prepared vegetables and additional dishes at a lower price point. Come for the roast duck, but skip the secret menu.

We went to Sun Wah for dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the spacious seating - getting a table without a wait was easy. We started with the Ginger Cosmic, a ginger-based non-alcoholic cocktail, along with a Tsingtao beer. For food, we ordered the stir-fried baby bok choy, roast duck on rice, and beef chow fun.
The cocktail was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the bok choy was well-seasoned and came with a generous portion of white rice. The roast duck on rice was a standout, and the beef chow fun was equally satisfying. The portions were enormous, so even between two people, we couldn’t finish everything.
Service was quick, and the staff were helpful throughout the meal. Overall, it was a very enjoyable dining experience.

Restaurantji Recommends
Was not expecting service like Alinea but the service was horrible, the duck is their supposed specialty and it was just OK. The atmosphere is...well felt like I was eating in an alley next to a dumpster. The server had an attitude from the get-go and we gave her no reason to be. Will never go back.

The Beijing Duck Dinner was excellent - crispy skin, and tasty. Other dishes ordered rounded out the meal: Walnut Shrimp, beef and pea pods, Chinese broccoli, medium bbq plate.

For me, perhaps I'm just not a fan of this region of Chinese foods. I did not enjoy eating. I did try many dishes we ordered but its just not my favorable type of food. Honestly nothing wrong with food, just my personal preference. Other than that everything was good.
