I give a lot of love for the cozy vibe and really solid, old-school Italian cooking. Homemade pastas are great and the drinks are solid. Service can run a little slow, but it’s still a neighborhood favorite. And great to visit before a show at Steppewolf.
We like to go to Trattoria Gianni after seeing the show at Steppenwolf. The food is always delicious, and portions are generous. The entire staff is friendly and attentive to us.
I had the octopus and sea bass. Both were outstanding. Cooked to perfection. My friend ordered the duck which was also moist and delicious. Their choice of vegetables with the dishes was also well thought out- mashed potatoes with the octopus and grilled squash with the fish. A medley of veggies with the duck. Drinks and food were awesome. At the end of the day I think the costs are high, but the food was delicious.
Perhaps Saturday is just a bad time to go to this restaurant. The noise level was deafening. The food was.good but not great. The space was full; the wait staff was stretched. Amadeus at Steppenwolf probably produced the overflow crowd.
Food was very good, as was a glass of Soave. We were seated in the quiet rear of the restaurant, as we requested. Service was fine until our check came that included a second glass of wine - that we'd neither ordered nor was brought to the table. The waiter thanked us for pointing out the error, but didn't really apologize. Be sure to check the check!
So thrilled to find this gem! I went twice this week; the bar for a drink before the theater (convenient across from Steppenwolf) and loved it so much, we returned for dinner. Marco was wonderful, and we had a great dinner. I have food allergies and they clarified what I could have. Looking forward to returning.

Overall way too simple and average for the price, nice atmosphere but food is well below average
We love the old school atmosphere and friendly Italian vibe.
Great food and even better drinks. They carry some fabulous ports.

We chose the restaurant because it is close to Steppenwolf theater. We arrived at 5:40, plenty of time for the 8 pm show. We sat outside on the patio on a pleasant evening. Dinner service was slow and uneven. Three of us had salads, which we ate well before the other diner's soup arrived. It was watery and didn't taste like minnestroni so he sent it back. Our entrees were fine. We ordered dessert and coffee. Coffee came but not dessert so we had to cancel the order and rush to the theater.

A beautiful evening dining on the patio. Street noise generally minimal except emergency vehicles.
Wanted to like this more. We waited over an hour for our food which was on the pricier side for both the portion sizes and quality. Sitting outside on the patio was really nice though!
Trattoria Gianni is probably the restaurant in Chicago we've been to most often. Good food and friendly servers. Love eating on the patio.
Delicious food and nice ambiance. It was chilly, so we chose to eat inside instead of on the lovely patio, but it was calm and warm inside. Everything we chose was great and there was a wide range of equally delicious sounding choices.
One of the reasons we selected this restaturant was the ability to dine outside. The patio was a perfect setting: spacious, yet cozy with just the right balance of ambiance and open-air charm. We ordered mainly seafood dishes and the food was outstanding—beautifully presented, full of flavor made with high-quality, fresh ingredients. Our waiter Davide was so fun, attentive, helpful with dish and wine selection. Great experience, definitely coming back :)
