We went to the Gin Mill recently for a birthday dinner. Very old, and historical building.
The service was good. I'm a craft beer drinker and they had no IPAs. As for the food, I ordered the NY strip with twice baked potato. I'm used to a twice baked where the potato is hot and white with plenty of melted cheese. What i got was completely different. It tasted burnt. I may go back for the burger. The steak was cooked medium but others in the party had their steaks under or over cooked.

One of the best Cobb salads I've had! (actually wished it had a few more slices of avocado) Service was great!

The “famous” Delmonico was just okay. It was a thick cut and cooked perfectly, but it really lacked flavor. The Caesar salad was very good and one of the highlights of the meal. The menu has several other dishes that look worth trying, so I plan to come back for another visit.
Service was not great, but it seemed more like a staffing problem than the server’s fault. She was covering too many tables along with the patio, which made it hard for her to give consistent attention. With better staffing, the service would likely improve.
Overall, this felt like a 3.5 star experience. Some parts of the meal were enjoyable, others were underwhelming, but there is enough potential here that I am willing to give it another chance.
Update (October 2025):
I returned to The Gin Mill and had a much better experience. I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu — it was very tasty, though slightly overcooked, which made it a bit dry and burned some of the breading. Thankfully, the cheese sauce saved it. The cup of French onion soup was delicious, the Caesar salad was once again excellent (fresh and clearly made with house dressing), and the twice-baked potato was very good.
Service was noticeably improved this time around — attentive and friendly without feeling rushed. Overall, this visit raised my impression of the place to a solid 4 stars. I can see the kitchen’s potential, and I’ll definitely be back again.

Good first visit. Everyone in my party seemed to enjoy their food. Nice patio on a warm October afternoon.

The food was terrible. The steak was tough and unseasoned. The loaded potatoes had an off taste to it. This was last weekend.

Dinner was not as good as the last time we went. Server was very nice but she seemed overwhelmed with tables.

Their menu is outstanding. The dish I ordered, Beef Blackstone, was too salty and not a lot of other flavors going other than burnt garlic. The filets were cooked perfectly. I found myself scraping off the sauce. Next time will go with the plain filet. I expected more for a $42 meal. Others in the party were pleasantly delighted, so that's good.
