Finally, after searching for years... I have found THE taco spot in Elgin! Yes, the prices listed are incorrect, printing is expensive and online sources lie; as of 8/2025, they're $3.75/taco. Still about $1/taco cheaper than some places, AND they're better than average, AND they're bigger than average (twice the size of a couple well known places down the street - I'm looking at yall southeast on villa)! Steak, al pastor, barbacoa, Chile relleno - all on point.
Opened late for me as well, good help is hard to find. Not open at 10 but came back a little before 11 and she apologized for the late start.
As far as the reviews claiming rude, or racist to non-hispanics, I didn't experience this. I'm sure she deals with all sorts of weird, rude and entitled folks on a daily basis. I tried as much Spanish as I could (meats and numbers) and I think she had a chuckle. I'm comfortable enough I don't mind laughing at myself. And she CAN speak English too!
As far as I'm concerned, this place is a gem and I will be back almost every time I'm working in Elgin.

Many places in Elgin offer great tacos, but these are our favorites. If you’re looking for something different, I highly recommend their mushroom huaraches, which are full of flavor. While the atmosphere is charming, keep in mind that the space is quite small, with only a few tables inside and some picnic tables outside. I usually opt for carry-out, but I have dined in and found it to be a cute little spot. Be sure to check out the photos on the wall; they showcase the deep history of Elgin.

If you’re craving authentic Mexican flavors, Taqueria El Cokito is a must-visit! The tacos are bursting with flavor, the tortillas taste freshly made, and the meat is seasoned to perfection. I especially loved their carne asada—juicy, tender, and perfectly grilled. The salsa has just the right amount of heat, and the portions are generous for the price. The staff is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home. Can’t wait to come back and try more from their menu!

I had a really bad experience with Taquería El Cokito. We tried to avoid the $15 Uber Eats fees by ordering directly, but we were charged almost $20 more than the Uber Eats total. No detailed receipt, just a total—very shady. And honestly, the caldo de res and chile relleno tacos were disgusting. Not worth the money at all. Extremely disappointing.
Very good food and very good service ?

Very good food!
But when I order takeout the sauce is sometimes spoiled or I'm missing something in my order AND I have to call or return.
The girls have to be more attentive to orders.

They charge you whatever they want that day. Prices on their menu say they can change at any time and do not reflect the current price. When they give you the receipt it doesn't show that they charged you for each thing you ordered, it simply gives you a total
All the food is prepared to order and the meat is very juicy when in other places, especially the asada tacos, the meat is tough and dry.

The lady who is there in the morning is very rude and very haughty, she is a lady who wears ponytail glasses and skirts. I didn't ask for his name because I didn't want to be rude. But she serves very poorly. Compared to the other girls there, I grab the chips and the money by touching them with my hand.
