“Galena’s Main Street rewards wandering and punishes planning. By 5pm on a Saturday in high season it is loud, crowded, and entirely indifferent to the fact that you are hungry, traveling with five other people, and have booked nothing.
We tried Fried Green Tomatoes largely because it was there — the honest reason most good meals begin — and were seated immediately on the patio. That does not happen to a walk-in six-top in August, and it was the evening’s first accurate signal: this is a house that knows how to run a floor. Our server confirmed it, attentive in the way that is difficult to teach — present when wanted, invisible when not.
The building has stood at 213 N. Main since 1854, when it held the leather-goods business of Ulysses S. Grant’s father, and Fred Bonnet has cooked inside it for the better part of three decades with the restraint to let the exposed brick do the talking. Outdoors, the history recedes and a more useful virtue takes over: you sit apart from the churn of Main Street, close enough to feel the town’s pulse and far enough to hear the person across the table. For a party of six, that may be the whole thing.
Starters arrive in oversized martini glasses, a flourish that usually announces a kitchen more interested in the photograph than the plate. Not here. The Steak Martini — tenderloin tips set into mashed potato with bacon, blue cheese, and a sweet port glaze — is built in strata, each descent of the fork bringing a different ratio of fat, salt, and sweetness. The meatball version works on the same logic: presentation as engineering, not decoration. The namesake you order without deliberation — breaded, fried in olive oil, finished with cheese and marinara, the fruit still tart and holding its shape beneath the crust, precisely where this dish usually collapses.
Six of us ranged the length of the menu, scallops to steak, without a weak plate among them; the desserts held the line. Any kitchen can look brilliant through one signature dish ordered by one diner. Landing six different plates at a single table on a busy Saturday is a different discipline, and a far truer measure of what is happening back there.
In a downtown that trades briskly in charm and occasionally forgets about the cooking, Fried Green Tomatoes is the room where the food is the point and the noise is somebody else’s problem. Book ahead if you are sensible — and go anyway if you are not. Highly recommended.“
