I was led to believe by two 1-star reviews posted yesterday by presumable nonagenarians that this was a family restaurant where they cook in translucent blouses with no undergarments. Obviously, I got the kids and wife together and had to check this place out given how unique that would be. Unfortunately, we arrived at a hole in the wall (I say this affectionately) where the staff may or may not have had on undergarments because their shirts weren't translucent. Johnnie Mae's Creole Kitchen is a tiny gem hiding in plain sight in Highwood, a hole in the wall (said affectionately) that focuses on excellent food. It is a to go restaurant but provides a few tables/chairs to eat there, and staff will plate the food instead of wrapping it up. Service is great, and the ambiance is one of those small places that says, look, you are here to eat some excellent food.
The food is a highlight. The Fried Lobster Po Boy was excellent, and the Fried Chicken was amazing as well. The hot sauce is fire too. Phenomenal catfish Po'Boy has very crispy breading with great seasoning. A shrimp po' boy arrives freshly prepared with a generous portion of tasty shrimp atop a classic roll, with the right amount of remoulade. Bahamian fritters are heaven, the blackened chicken po' boy is yum, and the codfish sandwich is delish. Cajun fries are crispy outside, tender inside, and zesty but not too spicy. The Cajun jambalaya has good flavor, though the rice was luke warm. The butter sauce with the seafood boil is liked, and the rum cake is moist, though more on the sweeter side. The pricing is on the higher side, but the food is so good one could cry.
