This is the worst Chinese food I have had in a long time. We ordered take. On the positive side it was ready around 10-15 minutes early. That was great The Kung Pao chicken, Szechuan style, was ordered mild. It came loaded with chopped red (hot) peppers and the chicken was over cooked and slightly burnt. It was not mild, rather more like moderate or moderate/hot. My wife ordered lamb with cumin, also mild. Same comment about heat level. Also with cumin does not mean loaded to with cumin but rather I would have preferred it was taste of cumin, not overwhelming. Also our beef pot sticker were mostly doughy and not very tasty. Perhaps that is the way beef pot stickers are prepared.

Food is awful. Basic stuff like egg rolls, chicken satay, and crab Rangoon were bland, lacked vegetables, fried terribly. The entrees had almost no veg except moo shu pork which was almost exclusively veggies and no pork! The wrapper was dry and they were already wrapped which made them dried out. It is also really hard to know what to order with almost no menu descriptions and a zillions items. And it was more expensive than MUCH better Asian restaurants in the area. I would not go here again. Just terrible! The server was blunt and not welcoming, either. It was a very disappointing evening that our family had really been looking forward to. ?

* Favorite Dishes: Crispy Shrimp with Lemon Sauce, Salt and Pepper Tofu, Sago with Mango Cream * Service is pretty good. * Pretty anterior and decorations. * Pricey but worth it. The lunch specials are a great deal though.

We were here tonight and the service was awful. We waited a over 10 minutes before any asked if we wanted to order. It was almost 45 minutes before I got up to find out about our food. When the food arrived arrived it was our entrees not the appetizers we ordered. Apparently they were prepared, but then lost. I think it's time to find another Chinese restaurant after more 15 years off either dining in or taking out monthly.

The lunch special at Lao Sze Chuan is the best deal! I also enjoyed a spring roll and sweet and sour soup to start with. I chose to order the Sze chuan beef dish with rice (not pictured because I forgot haha). Everything was delicious, but I could tell my rice was not fresh which affected the enjoyment of my meal. I was also was unimpressed with the attitude of the workers and servers. I know everyone has their ups and downs and that it was peak lunch time and a lot was going on but l, when in the service industry, customer service and interactions are very important. I will probably go to the Evanston location for my next visit.

The food is delicious and the menu is huge. Everything is fresh and well spiced. Unfortunately like other reviewers have said, this place has a joyless staff. We’re here frequently and it’s the same somber attitude and it really makes it uncomfortable to be there.. but the meals are so great! We’ve worked our way through the massive menu and it’s all been great. They bring a small dish of complimentary spicy cabbage upon seating; it’s crunchy and SPICY! The Boba teas are good and every menu ingredient is fresh. But again, it’s served with a glare… we asked for our check last week and 4 different servers came to see if we were ready to pay within 3 minutes… . 2pm in the afternoon and we are mid-aged..not sure if this location is franchise or run by founder Tony Hu, but if so, he needs to have a come to Jesus meeting with the staff…. Oops and we will be back soon for the Kung Pao Shrimp…. No shame!Vegetarian options: Great tofu options.. Ma zoo Tofu is delicious and they will do medium spicy too!

I think Lao Sechuan is the one of the better more authentic Chinese chain resturants around... BUT the quality of the food seems to vary by location. The downtown Evanston location is so much better. The fried eggplant with pork at this location could not even be called the same dish as the evanston one. Just go there instead...
