Food was very good and CHEAP!! There was 6 of us, no wait, we just sat ourselves. Only waited for our food for maybe 10-15 mins. For all of us the total was $50. Portion size is a little bit smaller.

This place was great from top to bottom. Food was absolutely delicious, super fast, large portions. The service was spot on, my coffee cup never went low

5+ stars for the nostalgic aspect and the decor of the place, 3 stars for the food and portion sizes. Unfortunately, none of the food had that "wow" factor- very standard and average. Our server was very friendly though, and we had a good time here.

If you’re in the area, go to the Hen House for breakfast. This family run place is authentic and the food is literally served up hot and fresh. The portion sizes are very filling - you won’t leave hungry. The decor is kitschy with hens, farm and country. There is a small gift snip tucked in the corner with books, small home decor items and candy. Pictured below: waffle, bacon omelet (stuffed with bacon), hash browns and biscuits and the short stack of blueberry pancakes (real blueberries).

Very nice place with super friendly staff, great breakfast and lunch menu. Absolutely 5 star place, thank you!

The walls were filthy with old splattered food, it smelled, you could see deep cleaning is not part of their routine there. The food was generic and all the staff kept discussing was they couldn't wait for 2o'clock, closing time...

Great road food option when you're tired of McDonalds and junk from the gas station. The nostalgia is heavy here: the building looks just like a barn and the inside is a real throwback. Hen House was a fast-growing chain at one time but due to mismanagement the parent company filed bankruptcy decades ago. But similar to what happened with Bakers Square, there's still a handful of privately owned locations around. This is one of those. Most of the food is decent and cooked fresh, but the best thing here is the fried chicken (surprise surprise). Their breading is really nice, kind of light and crispy, not a heavy, thick batter. It's some of the best fried chicken around. Take it from someone who knows his chicken!

The hen house used to be a great place for my children and I to eat breakfast at until one day it seemed the staff stopped caring for the customers! Great food but could use better service.

We went to the hen house outside of Springfield, Illinois. We the the daily special of fried fish and fries. It was very good. Service was good. Would go back.

The food is good and portions sizeable. I would give a higher rating if the bathrooms hadn't been so dirty and cold. In the middle of a pandemic someone should be able to wash their hands in a relatively clean place. The food did come out super fast and it was all fresh and tasted good.

Food was very delicious. The bacon had good flavor and thwie biscuits and gravy were fulfilling. The coffee cups on the table were dirty so we had to request a different set. Their milk creamer was also expired. The service wasn't too great, but the food was delicious.

So a little bit longer review this time because this place is fantastic!! Was driving home to visit my mother and we got hungry and decided to pick an exit to stop and grab lunch. I'm usually Cracker Barrel girl. If there's one I always go but this time I saw a hen house as well and decided let's try something new. I'm sooooo glad. First off the small town vibe and interior decorated like I remember most kitchens being back when I grew up was so cool down to the upside down coffee cups already at each place setting.Secondly the food was perfect! The home fries were fresh and crispy, bacon was literally perfection and scrambled eggs were soft and fluffy and omg the biscuits and gravy ? I met the chef and thanked him for the most comforting perfectly cooked breakfast I had found in years. Our waitress was sweet and loved the service. I can't recommend this hen house enough!!!!

Good food, cooks just need to make sure stuff is HOT that's supposed to be hot and waitresses should ALWAYS be double checking plates for accuracy. Nice staff.

Hadn't been in 4-5yrs (craving chicken and remembered my parents loved the Hen House). Chicken, fish and mushrooms were fantastic! Service was great also. The only complaint (why not 5stars) was the sides weren't the best. Bread had way too much yeast? Green beans bland and Tatar sauce a little off. But still will be back again
