I've been going to McLain's bakery in Kansas City my entire life. I have mostly excepted the changes but I don't frequent it near as much as I did the original location. I have never been to the one in Lawrence before today. It's terrible if you are wanting baked goods. Everything we bought off of the shelves was stale. Very disappointingđ„Č
Highly disappointed with my experience here as I was highly recommended to use them for my wedding cake. I had a great encounter when I reached out regarding my inquiry. I gave a photo of one of their own cakes for reference of what I wanted. We had agreed on it and I was told exactly what to expect. Come the day of pickup I sent out my sister to pick up the cake. She said the staff member that brought out the cake was very odd and seemed to hide the front of the cake before setting it into the car. She sent me a photo of the cake and I was baffled that the staff member would let that cake leave the store looking the way it did. I called and told her how unhappy I was and she offered to bring it inside and fix it. So 30 minutes later I get a follow up picture with the so called fixed cake and I was still unhappy with it but with no time to spare getting the cake to the venue I had to deal with it. I will say they did give me a partial refund after I called back and complained about it. But that does not excuse the lack of attention to the simple cake I asked for and the monstrosity they originally were going to let us leave with. I was thoroughly embarrassed by my wedding cake and I hope none of my guests looked too closely to it because it was an eye sore. Not to mention the cake was yellow and not white which is not what we had discussed either. I cannot recommend this place since they seem to not value all customers and ruining my wedding morning with this.
Picture 1 is what I asked for. Picture 2 is what they originally were going to let me leave with and picture 3 is the âfixedâ cake I ended up leaving with.

Asked for a gender reveal cupcake and was never told the order was ready and they closed at an unusually early hour so when we went to pick them up (in case it was ready) they were already closed anyways.

Ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of potatoes and scrambled eggs. Didnât have time to come back for them to fix it. They gave me over easy eggs instead. It was terrible and I didnât eat half the meal. Waste of money and disappointing.
I'm surprised at mentions of customer service as I would actually like if they toned down the cheer on greeting but that's just me I guess ?
I'm a regular for the espresso cupcake, fries and have now ordered my wedding desserts here too!
I'm always greeted by at least one friendly face who's happy to help. My mom on visiting from abroad was also very impressed and even had two of them trying to workout if she be able to buy and take home some of their hot chocolate mix which she adores.
They made our wedding so easy. They have a cake tasting box you can customize and order up to two days in advance and it was wonderful for us to try and discuss different flavor combos in comfort of our own home.
We ordered a wedding cake and some mini cupcakes for the wedding and it was all smooth and easy. We got so many compliments on the cake and plan to order it every anniversary. They're very open to requests (within reason) too which is always appreciated.

Iâve been here over a dozen times for breakfast and have always enjoyed my experience. I would call the atmosphere airy and comfortable. All the food Iâve tried has been pretty good.

Kinda glad to see other reviews here mentioning lack of customer service. The food is amazing and I love to support local, but my very first visit here a few months ago and todayâs take-out has convinced me I probably will not come back.
First visit, none of the staff greeted or even smiled at me and my husband. The cashier just stood there awkwardly as we were trying to figure out what weâd like from the menu since it was our first time. And though no one was behind us, I felt I just had to order something since she seemed so bothered we couldnât decide. Our good vibes died at the door. We tried to salvage them because the food was delicious, but we decided we couldnât have our business meeting there. The only time they became friendly was when I went back up to ask for take-out boxes.
I decided to order lunch from them yesterday while on my way to an appointment and didnât realize I hadnât changed the pick-up time. So I called TWICE to let them know I made that mistake and wouldnât be picking it up until later, but no one answered both times. Why even have a phone number on Google?
I guess if youâre lucky theyâre friendly to you and give you customer service?
Customer service was amazing! Everyone was so happy and excited to help. Answered all my questions with a smile. Food is great, good portions and flavor. They have really good pastries along with tasty desserts! They also had pretty cakes available for last minute needs. They also take custom cake orders!

Expensive and the workers were actually mean. Also, the last two times I have been theyâve made my drink hot instead of iced. The hostile environment perpetuated by the staff did not make me want to try to ask them to remake my drinks.

Although we loved the cake we were able to try to potentially use them for our wedding, we cannot recommend this place at all. We had originally booked them for our wedding however, the lack of customer service and communication throughout our process left us uneasy. We had wonderful communication prior to having a tasting, however after that there was no follow up asking if we enjoyed our tasting and we were the ones to reach out. We also had to contact their other location in KC to even get a response as to what was going on. We were left with having to pick a new bakery TWO WEEKS before our day. I would never give this business my money again and hope no one else has to experience what we did.

I love Mclain's! I have been to all locations. Best bakery/coffee shop/breakfast/ lunch combo in south KC and Lawrence.

Overpriced, slow, and small portions
Great spot to waste time tho cute outdoor area when the sun is not cooking ya
Pear and pecan salad is amazing but it's only going to take about 20 min, literally only reason I go there it's that tasty
Toast and things like that is good but only worth about $3 and again takes 20+ min to get. If you dont want to wait or are not hungry for breakfast since they do not serve till 12 and will not take lunch orders at 11:50
Good luck getting outta drive threw there is only the 40 min food line to wait in to get around building and leave or the drive around area that is blocked by all the employee cars
