My friends and I made our last of many visits to Johnny's BBQ today; 1/26/20. It was very busy. The service and food were good, just like always. Johnny made a point to visit our table to make sure everything was okay. And he made it a point to shake our hands and thank us for our patronage over all the years. His food, service and great ownership attitude will be missed. We wish Johnny and his family the very best luck on their future endeavors and life!

Food was great, pulled pork, chicken, fries, coleslaw and beans. Everything was wonderful and staff was great also. Can't wait to go back and I live 50 miles away!!
After reading the reviews, we stopped to eat at Johnny’s. We have never had shaved brisket because we are from Texas and bbq is all about the meat: slow-cooked, pit-smoked, thick slices. Pretty disappointed but I guess it’s what you are familiar with that counts. The sides were expensive for the portion and the beans were baked not pintos. The coleslaw and bread were good, but overall the experience was just not to our liking. The staff was very friendly, the service was great, the restaurant was clean. Definitely not in the top 50 bbq rankings in our opinion.

Was seated then ignored by two servers until I went to the ‘to go’ counter after waiting 10 minutes. The gal I spoke to came out with our menus and everything went pretty much smooth. They didn’t have any ribs left, it was at 2:45pm on a Saturday and they are known for their ribs. Went ahead and got burnt ends which weren’t ‘burnt’. Use to be a great place to go, but I guess since the owner is closing & retiring his staff just doesn’t care.

This location of Johnny's plans to close January 2020, as its owner is retiring. I read the ribs are fall-off-the-bone in other reviews, which means they're actually cooked a little too far. In our order, they were a little on the tough side. But the bark and flavor well made up for this. The brisket was fair, it could use more smoke. The burnt ends were pretty good although they came sauced which I feel like usually hides meat that's not true burnt ends. The beans are a little too oniony for my taste but they were overall pretty good. Not overly sweet like many in KC and also not too soupy. Fries were super crispy. The restaurant is clean, offers accessible entry and restrooms, has a large, dedicated parking lot, and outdoor seating. I definitely recommend you hit it up before it's retired. (Note: My cousin Joe Mike lives for their hot dogs here, so if that's your jam, try one!)
