I donât know what kind of wizardry theyâre performing in the smoker at Bates City BBQ, but Iâm 97% sure theyâve got a direct portal to barbecue heaven back there.
Walked in smelling like stress and regret. Walked out smelling like brisket and better decisions.
The ribs? Fall-off-the-bone like theyâre tired of holding on to their past. The burnt ends? Tender cubes of meat candy sent directly from the grill gods. And the sauce? Somewhere between a warm hug and a spicy love letter. Iâd put it on my taxes if the IRS allowed it.
I ordered the combo platter thinking Iâd save some for later â LOL. That plate didnât see the light of a to-go box. I blacked out somewhere between the smoked turkey and the baked beans and woke up licking my fingers like a caveman rediscovering fire.
10/10 would sell a kidney to eat here again.

Ordered a Shawnee southern sandwhich.. it was about 80% coleslaw and 20% pulled pork. The bun was literally soaking due to a liquid at the bottom of the box. I called them to let them know and they said there is nothing they can do about it. I wouldnât recommend this bbq to anyone, worse in Kansas. No flavor. Nothing special about it, feeding the rest to my dog.

BBQ and fries were spot on in great taste, ribs fell off the bone, very friendly Team, atmosphere was clean and had memorabilia to look at. I found a TWA license plate that was interesting to me. Drove 20 minutes after reading these reviews to find out as we are new to the area. Will be back and highly recommend. We had the mixed plate and bbq brisket.
