Lou Lou on Market has the Best Food and service! We had a large group of 8 and it was a struggle finding a good restaurant for a Graduation dinner with family from all different states. I had to try the Hot Brown, as it is a regional dish and had never tried it. If there is a cheese heaven, this dish will send you there. It was so delicious! I highly recommend! We had the Chicago pizza, several alcohol drinks, Mac and cheese, burger with an egg, Shrimp po Bo, Boudin balls, crawfish dip, beignets, bourbon bread pudding. Everything was so good! The service was amazing! It is a tight restaurant with lots of worker and several tables. I believe they have a few floors. We sat on the main floor, due to a disability. I made reservations with Open Table and it was reliable and they had our reservation. If you are in Louisville, go to Lou Lou on Market!

Lou Lou on Market was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The service was friendly, attentive, and welcoming, and the atmosphere was one of my favorite parts. The outdoor patio with live music created the perfect setting for dinner.
The food was outstanding overall. We tried the crawfish bayou dip, crawfish mac and cheese, shrimp and grits, and the blackened redfish. The crawfish bayou dip was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor, while the crawfish mac and cheese was pure comfort food. The blackened redfish was the star of the meal—perfectly seasoned, flaky, and cooked just right. The creamy spinach and mushroom risotto served with it was absolutely divine and paired beautifully with the fish.
The shrimp and grits were creamy and loaded with shrimp, but I would have loved a little more Cajun seasoning or spice to give the dish a bigger kick. That said, the quality of the ingredients and presentation were excellent.
Great food, great service, live music, and a wonderful atmosphere. If you’re visiting Louisville and looking for Cajun-inspired food, Lou Lou on Market is definitely worth a stop. We will absolutely be back!
A little piece of New Orleans tucked into the heart of NuLu
Lou Lou on Market is exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble into on a Saturday night in a city you’re visiting. We managed to snag a same-day reservation for two at 8pm on the upstairs patio, and from the moment we walked in, this place had us.
The atmosphere is genuinely special. Inside, the walls burst with bright NOLA-inspired colors and artwork that immediately transport you somewhere south of here. Downstairs there’s a basement bar that was humming with energy; loud, lively, and clearly the place to be if you want that full New Orleans dive bar feeling. Outside is a generous garden space canopied under large locust trees, and on Saturday night a live musician was set up playing classic covers spanning the 60s all the way through to the present. It was loud, but in the best possible way, the kind of music that settles into the background and just makes everything feel better.
We were seated upstairs on the balcony, which turned out to be the sweet spot. You catch the music drifting up from below, the outdoor breeze keeps things comfortable, and the energy of the whole space wraps around you without being overwhelming. There’s also indoor seating upstairs that felt noticeably cooler than the lower level, worth knowing if you’re sensitive to the heat.
For starters we ordered the spicy creole mussels, and they were outstanding. The Cajun broth alone was worth the visit — deeply flavorful, aromatic, and absolutely addictive. It came with focaccia bread for dipping, and we immediately asked for more. We used every last piece to soak up every last drop of that broth. No regrets.
For mains we went with the blackened mahi and the Cajun sampler. The mahi was perfectly cooked, beautifully blackened on the outside, tender inside, and the crawfish étouffée it came alongside was rich and soulful in exactly the right way. The Cajun sampler was the smart move for anyone who can’t choose just one bayou classic, which was exactly our problem. It let us taste our way through the menu’s highlights without having to compromise, and everything on the plate held its own.
On the way out we grabbed the banana foster cheesecake to go. We didn’t get to it until about 30 minutes after leaving, and it still held up beautifully; creamy, indulgent, and a perfect nightcap to a perfect meal.
If you’re in Louisville and find yourself in the NuLu district, Lou Lou on Market is a must. It’s festive without being gimmicky, the food is the real deal, and the atmosphere on a Saturday night is something you’ll want to come back for.
Get the mussels. Soak up the broth. Don’t skip dessert.

Food was phenomenal! Atmosphere was such a vibe! Live music was SO good! I had the bone in pork chop which came with risotto and greens- SO good! My husband had the salmon which came with cheddar grits and asparagus, also- SO good. He did say the grits could have used a bit more salt, but that was an easy fix. In the spirit of being honest, their drinks were not the best. Aside from that, 9/10!
Their Hot Brown is better than the Brown Hotel.
