“Decent hotel restaurant inside the Canopy by Hilton downtown.
Came here for a quick bite during my stay at the hotel. The restuarant started as a Creole and Cantonese mashup as a nod to the Chinatown that used to be in this area, but it’s since changed into a more standard hotel spot. When I recently came in, it was limited to the open front lobby section, but since there was almost no one around it was still nice and relaxed.
Food was pretty much what you'd expect from a business hotel, but NOLA restaurants have such an aggressive baseline with all the Creole and Cajun seasoning that it's hard to go terribly wrong. I tried to order things specific to the region and two of them had crawfish, and the issue was that crawfish season (usually March through May) ended months ago, so these were frozen tails, which lack the orange fat that carries most of the flavor. They were really tiny, since processors peel the smaller crawfish and save the big ones for live boils, and the fat usually gets washed off before freezing because it goes rancid within a few months.
The crawfish bread was basically cheesy crawfish tails inside a po-boy style loaf, and it was okay. The crawfish mac and cheese came out in a huge portion with sausage mixed in, and the pasta itself was decent, but the crawfish didn't add anything since the cheese and smoky sausage seasoning drowned out whatever sweetness frozen tails have left.“
