About Cafe Degas

Cafe Degas is a dream come true, located in a cozy spot on Esplanade Avenue. Despite occasional bad weather and technical issues, the hosts and servers are calm, professional, and courteous. The food and service are outstanding, especially coming from a kitchen the size of a small residential galley kitchen. The Saffron Tom Collins, French onion soup, lump crab salad, and shrimp and grits are to die for. The bistro ambience is enhanced by see-through roll-up shades that can be opened in good weather for an al fresco experience. While table service may lack attention at times, the food, including the antipasta platter, grilled pompano, and steak frites, remains outstanding.

Customers enjoy a great lunch experience with well-presented portions and high quality. The Coolinary Lunch is noted as a great bargain, with dishes like Veal Viennoise and Beef receiving praise. The only downside noted is the noise level when the dining room is full, particularly from loud family tables that may have started their evening of alcohol intake before arriving. There have been efforts to manage the noise with sound-absorbent baffles, but the hard surfaces make it challenging. Diners are encouraged to go with the flow, raise their voices if needed, and enjoy the great food, wine, and cocktails. The menu features delightful options like the crust on the drum, delicious cauliflower puree, lovely Vichysoisse, and outstanding desserts from the pastry chef, including a pear tart that does not disappoint.

Overall, Cafe Degas is a lovely and beautiful place with great food and friendly service. The atmosphere makes diners feel as if they are in France, not New Orleans. Many customers have praised the excellent food and service, with standout dishes like lamb, shrimp risotto, and the best onion soup in town. Service can vary, with some staff needing more training, but overall, the experience remains memorable. Cafe Degas continues to provide a special dining experience that keeps customers coming back.

I have been coming to this place as a treat since 1989 when I could come with my racetrack winnings from making show betsand have un bon repas (Oh those profiteroles!). It has had its ups and downs, but today was The Pits!
First of all, when I tried to look at the brunch menu at home, I got: "Daily Specials Unavailable Due To Chef Input Error.
Please Contact Restaurant." I should have taken it as a sign.

Amazing, laid back Southern brunch. French mimosas & a crab salad. Fantastic atmosphere & service.

Snuck in without a reservation, but don’t recommend trying that given how fabulous the food and beverages are here. Inflection points like house mad Worcestershire, Sauce which is used in the spicy Bloody Mary and what may be New Orleans best BBQ Shrimp we’ve ever had, proved this team’s commitment to wowing diners, even locals like us. Quiet and out of the party crowd’s way, but still in the middle of all the New Orleans action and beauty, Cafe Degas pairs chef driven...read full review
