Osteria Lupo Is Sloppy and Dangerous with Food Allergies
Main takeaway: Informing Osteria Lupo up front that you have a food allergy is not enough--if you have a food allergy, you should avoid the restaurant altogether. That's my warning. If anyone wants to read my group's experience, details follow.
Came in with a party of four, explained I had a life-threatening nut allergy, asked whether I should avoid the four-course special sharing menu. The waiter replied it would be fine and joked that he had connections in the kitchen, and we went with it. The first dish that hit our table had nuts two ways, but the kitchen made me a portion with the nut sauce and the pesto drizzle removed. While what I got was consequently plain (mozzarella on a piece of toast), I held out hope for more flavorful dishes ahead and at this point I sensed the kitchen was looking out for me. Unfortunately, that turned out not to be the case. Over courses 2 through 4, the servers (who were not always the same from course to course) began setting dishes with nuts right in front of me. Our options increasingly featured nuts, leaving me to watch my company eat. The presence of the nuts was at least clear until one dish landed that I took to be one I could safely eat—and then one of our party asked the server, “Does this contain walnuts?” I froze, waiting for the lead server to answer, and he confirmed that nuts were in fact present. My table became very concerned and reminded the lead that I had a severe allergy, at which time the server reported, “The kitchen is not aware.” This was fairly stunning but it explained a lot, and by the time dessert arrived—two dishes, both with nuts—I’d been scared past the point of enjoying my meal anyway.
I want to be very clear as I write this that, as an allergy sufferer, I don’t feel it’s any restaurant’s responsibility to cater to me. The chefs have their vision and, if that vision contains nuts, they can tell me to eat elsewhere. However, once you’ve invited me in to dine, knowing I have an allergy, you have entered a contract to try to keep me alive. Osteria Lupo failed on this count. Most restaurants understand this is a life and death matter. Osteria Lupo doesn't get it.

Delicious oysters, lamb cooked to perfection, pasta fresh, octopus tasty and cooked right. Great wine selection, friendly staff.

Let me begin with Erin, my server, she guided my experience every step of the way, and I couldn’t have been more pleased! Initially we discussed my cocktail and wine preferences , she insisted I try a particular wine, which to my delight, I enjoyed.
I started with the Pesce Crudo, which was fresh, light, and beautifully plated. Then the Spicy Rigatoni alla Vodka, paired with a delightful red wine, was hands-down one of the best pasta dishes I’ve had in New Orleans — perfectly cooked with a balanced creamy sauce and just the right level of heat. To be clear I rarely order pasta, I would certainly order this again.
You can tell they take pride in both their food and hospitality.

If you’re looking for upscale Italian in a relaxed, modern setting, with great local ambiance — Osteria Lupo is it. Looking forward to bring those I love back with me!

Delicious and great service! We shared the tasting menu for restaurant week and it was a great choice. Definitely would come back in the future.

We went to here for restaurant week and it was an amazing experience. My partner is vegetarian and so we asked if they could do a vegetarian restaurant week menu and they accommodated us. Everything from the salad to the pizza to the pasta was absolutely delicious. We also got the summer tart to end it and it was awesome. Staff was very nice and we loved the atmosphere. Definitely will be coming back!

Wow! This meal was excellent. We went for dinner with my kids and husband. We had two pizzas - the best I’ve found outside of Italy. We had the mushroom pasta which was excellent - the pasta was perfect. We had three starters. The arancini had a nice flavor but wasn’t serve very hot - it would’ve been better hotter. The octopus was nice and the burrata is hard to mess up. But the bread served with was delicious.
We had two desserts which were both fine but I didn’t think they were blow me away good. The kids had ice cream which was very good.
We will definitely return.

Strong menu, comfortable elegant setting. Excellent pasta dishes and interesting and experimental small plates. Family style I think is best.

The server Kevin is horrible. He mentioned several things that were signs of beta uprising culture throughout my experience. Do yourself a favor and ask to be seated with someone else.

The pasta is too al dente.
They nickel and dime you. Every extra thing is $2.00 including red pepper flakes or extra virgin olive oil :(
