Pretty awful experience here. The entire station smelled awful and was very dirty. There are a lot of unsavory characters roaming around. I did not feel very safe here. I recommend just coming right before your train—no need to lounge here.
Very well maintained station, bathrooms were clean and buses I took left on time
Escalators not working for the holiday season is unacceptable. Thanksgiving now Christmas!!!! Holiday travelers with luggage. Total disgrace
This place is awful! Looks like a 3rd word country. Bathrooms are decidedly unsanitary. Help is hard to find and if you are disabled- forget all about it! ADA take action!!
My dad had an awful experience, after traveling 30 hours from Florida to Boston (one stop in NY) he found that the station was shut down- arrived around 1 AM. Not only were there no buses leaving to NH but the entire station was closed, so he was forced to sit outside. The homeless population continued to bug him for money for a few hours and then he finally had enough and decided to take a cab to his destination. Worst experience he said. The trip overall was good (amtrek) but south station itself needs some improvement. NY was a beautiful stop and stayed open, they should follow their guidelines.
Men’s restroom needs repair. Some don’t work. Some don’t have doors. Some are missing the toilet paper holder so now there’s a hole in the wall. No hooks for backpacks.
Currently under renovation and addition of a new building on top of the train tracks. Very busy, specially during rush hour. They've added a lot of new seating inside the station. There's a CVS store located inside, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's, Regina pizza and few other food places. The post office is right next door. When you walk out the station you are within a walking distance to Boston Children's Musuem and not to far of a walk to the New England Aquarium. The station to the interstate buses is right next door. And the subway is downstairs. Perfectly located in downtown Boston.
If you have to use the bathroom, you are better off going on the train. However, they get an extra star because of all the stations on the Franklin line, they are the best place to wait for your train, merely because they have climate control. That's a low bar.
This is one of my most visited train stations. My 2 adult children come here to get to work and school. I love that it not only has the commuter rails that go to a wide variety of places but they also have the Peter Pan Bus terminal and Greyhound. You can also connect to the the Red line. I come here to connect to the greenway. The only negative thing I can say about South Station is that some staff that work on commuter rails later night are rude and not helpful and Amtrak as well. The trains are usually put on the board and announced but really late night can be confusing.
Timing is everything on being very hectic inside during rush hour. Silver-line SL#1, SL#2, SL#3 buses entrance is towards the front part of the building in the midsection, across from going downstairs to the Red-line. The back part of the building is where all the commuter trains, Amtrak, and long distance buses are located...

Always amazes me how the people that work here are consistently useless when it comes to anything. You’re pretty much on your own here.
S1 is Always late it never come on time and it is the biggest reason why people got delays on their flight and it's so frustrating waiting for 40 min a bus, it's unorganized service. I would recommend!
Beautiful architecture...easy to get to Logan Airport on public transit too.
The outside architecture is quite nice but the inside is chaotic, somewhat dirty and can be a little confusing when busy. It’s not too big, though - so that helps. Trains can be late occasionaly but are generally timely. The boarding area has a somewhat industrial look/feel that I’m not so sure I like.
Great service
