We had a wonderful experience at Madrones, and a big reason was our server, Barry. He was incredible with our kids and made them feel truly special by creating custom “reindeer nose” lemonades with grenadine and cherries, telling them Christmas jokes, and surprising them with a brownie sundae. As parents, that kind of thoughtfulness means everything.
Barry also took excellent care of us by checking in on the prime rib status and going out of his way to bring extra butter without us having to ask. You can tell he genuinely takes pride in his work. Learning that he is a grandfather made perfect sense, because his warmth, patience, and attention to detail really showed.

I’ve dined at Madrones a handful of times over the years and felt it was finally appropriate to leave a review after our most recent visit. We joined them for dinner last night, having made a reservation a few days in advance through Resy, which was seamless and efficient.
This dinner was particularly meaningful, as it is a once-a-year family tradition during the Christmas season — a chance for everyone to reconnect. Our party included our 90-year-old grandmother as well as our infant, making attentiveness and pacing especially important.
Unfortunately, the service is the primary reason this review sits at 3 stars rather than five. Out of respect, I won’t mention the server by name, but the experience was disappointing. Our reservation was for 5:15 PM, and we were presented with the check by 6:35 PM. From the moment we were seated, the service felt rushed and transactional rather than hospitable.
When first approached, we ordered drinks and an appetizer but clearly communicated that we were not ready to place our dinner order and wanted time to settle in, catch up, and review the menu. Despite this, the server returned four separate times pressing us to order entrées. Eventually, we obliged simply to end the repeated interruptions. The discomfort was palpable across the table, and for a party of only five adults and a baby, it felt unnecessary and unprofessional.
That said, the beverages were excellent. I ordered a Cosmo, while the rest of the table enjoyed a mix of Long Island Iced Teas and wine. Their Malbec remains a favorite of ours and pairs beautifully with the steak offerings.
For an appetizer, we selected the goat cheese brûlée. While the dish itself was enjoyable, the accompanying naan bread was drizzled with balsamic, which proved to be an unexpected and polarizing pairing. The women at the table enjoyed it, while the men did not — something worth noting for diners sensitive to contrasting flavor profiles.
Entrées included two 9 oz filets with baked potatoes and asparagus, salmon with rice and vegetables, lettuce wraps, and shrimp and grits. The filets were excellent — rich in flavor, perfectly cooked, and finished with a satisfying crust. My father-in-law was especially enthusiastic about the shrimp and grits. The only notable disappointment was the salmon, which was improperly cooked and, regrettably, not able to be sent back.
As we were still eating, the server repeatedly attempted to clear plates, which felt intrusive and ill-timed. Additionally, another staff member began taking liquor inventory mid-meal, repeatedly squeezing between chairs and leaning over guests to access the cabinet beside our table. This was unusual, disruptive, and frankly bewildering — not something one expects during active dinner service.
To compound matters, our server asked three separate times if we wanted the check while two guests were still eating, ultimately leaving the Toast tablet on the table without discussion. At that point, the atmosphere had become uncomfortable, and we were ready to leave.
Despite the experience, we still tipped 20%, but we will be choosing a different restaurant for our family’s Christmas dinner going forward. Madrones continues to offer strong food and cocktails, but the service on this visit fell short of the standard we’ve previously enjoyed. At most we will only return for a happy hour at their bar.
