A great place to get bbq in Middletown
This restaurant, Black Hog BBQ, started in Frederick, Maryland and has grown into a small restaurant chain with four active locations in the state. Their website states that the black hog is the rarest breed of hogs and they decided to name their company after it. This location, the Middletown restaurant, is the newest addition to the group. We were driving through town and looking for a bite to eat and decided to try it. It is a little off the main road but pretty easy to get to. It is in a strip center on a corner unit with plenty of parking. We were greeted as we entered and taken to a table. The waitress, Athena, did a wonderful job for first-timers like us. She told us that most of the locations are similar to this one with a restaurant and a bar. I ordered a chopped pork platter (sandwich and a side of French fries) and a sweet tea. The sandwich and fries were excellent. The tea had a different taste from the ones that I am used to so that was not my favorite. Food is served on metal trays with butcher paper below and plastic silverware so don’t expect fancy plates. The staff was wonderful, the location was very clean and the prices were very reasonable for the amount and quality of food that you get. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it to fellow travellers looking for a good bbq meal in the area

Outstanding! I am up here for work from Florida, and as many times as I have been to Frederick, I can't believe I have not eaten here sooner. The atmosphere is wonderful! There is nothing better than the smell of smoked BBQ filling the air. Ample parking, and I love the location. The food is fantastic! I had the potato salad, sweet potatoes, and 2 meats (Arkansas Brisket which are burnt tips and Hot Links). The platter comes with pickled onions, pickles, and cornbread. It did not disappoint. Plus the original BBQ which comes with it, had an interesting flavor. Sweet and vinegary, with a little heat, which was nice. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for some good BBQ.

Pulled pork and ribs where excellent 👌
They had a nice smokey camp fire flavor.
Bacon Hamburger was bland 😞
Backed beans tasted like can beans with ketchup.
I'll be back just for the BBQ.

The DMV sandwich paired with greens made a great lunch after a couple days backpacking - with a generous amount of thick cut brisket. Take out staff were also very friendly. Would definitely do this again.

Clean, well lit. Great wait staff. Food was awesome, especially the pork sausage.

Service was good. Nice and accommodating. The atmosphere was fine. Nothing special but you aren't in a BBQ place for atmosphere. The brisket was bad. Dry. Bark had no bite to it. Fat cap wasn't trimmed or at least looked like it. The sauces weren't very good either. The burt ends where just cubed meat. Way too much sauce. Couldn't taste the meat. The Mac and cheese was average. I don't like it dry. The brown sugar sweet potatoes were fine. I've been avoiding the place for years. Was in the area just wanting some BBQ. It just reminded me why I avoid it.

I usually have had a good experience here, they have excellent food! unfortunately their bartenders don’t know how to check ids. i recently turned 21 so i understand why they are cautious but to turn away a loyal paying customer with a valid id is absurd to me. the bartender then asked if i had anything else with my name on it… thats even more illegal! a photo id is the requirement correct? not my problem they got busted a few weeks ago serving without carding. maybe invest in a scanner!
