Growing up, this was my parents date spot when we would visit my aunt who lived in hallowell at the time. It was a bit mythical in my mind from their tales of it when they came home and I can't believe that it lived up to the myth, 35 years later! Just that alone makes this experience wonderful. We each got specials, the crispy haddock (which was fish and chips without the fries) for me and the steak au poivre for my partner. Both of us would get it again. The best part of the meal was the peanut butter fudge swirl pie, which was the best dessert I've had at a restaurant in years. I was not expecting much but it was whipped really well and didn't feel heavy, which is a miracle with peanut butter. We were upstairs, they ask if you can do stairs when making reservations. It's definitely eclectic in the decor and it felt like there was something to admire anywhere you looked. There was a large party next to us that were a bit loud- it was so quiet once they left. It's not cheap but it's worth it and it's been around for decades but it's not stuffy at all.

I liked this place a lot. The atmosphere is warm, colorful, arty ... And the staff are super friendly and responsive. We both had the teriyaki tofu special with some interesting veggies and relishes. My friend had a giant ginger snap cookie for dessert, which they served w/ a dab of whipped cream. A local treasure.

Was a very good meal 1/24/2024 ! Also very good friendly service. Complements to the chef! Baked haddock special and seafood special in the pics were great.

Slates is unique. From the handwritten menu to the wide selection of dishes to the music. I have never had a bad time or a bad meal at Slates. The service is always excellent, and I think many of the staff have been there a long time. We always find something we like on the menu, but we never know what it might be because it changes all the time. The seating outside is very cute. If you are in Hallowell, you need to try Slates.

Danielle was exceptional and very courteous! Food was good on flavor but I was very disappointed with the temperature of my dish. Luke warm would have been good but it was cold. I like warmth in my food. Reason for the one star was the fact that the last group to come in ruined my experience. They were loud and obnoxious. Totally ruined everything and I didn’t get to experience the desert due to how obnoxious they were. Not worth the price we paid!! Also why was the online menu different than what I got at dinner. Lack of options was disappointing!

We've been here a couple times now, and enjoyed every single one of the visits. The service is kind and knowledgeable, the food is excellent and made and served in a homemade don't know the difference between your great grandma's best meal and this, kind of way. Highly recommend.

I've been to Slate's four times this year, for both brunches and dinners. Everything I have had so far has been top notch. Rarely have anything leftover to take home, except their baked goods! ? The drinks are always on-point, and drink specials and local beers are often rotated. A nice place for couples....

Our new favorite restaurant in the Augusta area. Haddock with crab meat and cheese was really great and the cabbage side was better than it needed to be as a side. Chill live music in the background was a nice touch and staff was super nice too.

Excellent food - had brunch with a group of 7 and every one of us loved our meals. Good coffees! Fun eclectic decor and friendly staff.

We've been coming to slates since before I could walk. Service is always so great, despite the huge demand they have. Crab Benedict with mimosas, bloody Marys, and coffee for brunch has been a staple.

Slates has good food, and our meal was no exception. But something was wrong with either the kitchen or service because the time between our salads and our main course was about 30 minutes. I was only halfway through my dish and the server was clearing plates and bringing coffee. We definitely felt rushed. For starters we had the crab cakes and aioli which were great, although slightly dry. The bread is awesome and it’s a generous portion. The seafood risotto is very tasty although this one was swimming in olive oil. The flatiron steak was delicious- great sauce and perfectly cooked. The lobster roll is also a great choice. The sides of mashed potatoes and roasted carrots are awesome. We finished with a M&Ms cookie and a lemon bar. Both were just okay- seems like they weren’t super fresh.

A very nice outdoor space for dinner. Good food good options. Our friends Matt a local says it's his go to place for Haddock. We agree and it has a gray atmosphere.
