On our first evening in Portland we underestimated how busy restaurants were. We walked to several of them on the wharf, but non accepted reservations and all had a 45-90-minute wait time. We walked back towards the city and found Gilbert's, a modest diner with a classical 1950s look. While there was a wait (Gilbert's was packed!), it was not too bad, so we got seated in about 15 minutes. The inside is modest, with utilitarian metal tables and chairs, a full bar, and...
Yum yum mussels!!!! Did not try any of the fantastic sounding chowders, but the mussels were great, simple broth, perfrctly steamed, mussels were certainly the sfar of the dish. My husband and I had an order each!
This is an oldie but goodie. Right in the middle of the port, It has been a tradition to eat dinner here every time I come to visit Portland. Their clam chowder is the best in town and their lobster roll, the meatiest. It’s a little chilly to eat in their patio right now, but in the summer, the scenery is unparalleled. The staff is super friendly and quick to take your order. Their specials allows to save a few bucks, but still come out full.
