Maiz was at the Kittery Mayfest and I was so excited to see they had not one but TWO vegan frozen empanada options. After buying the Vegan Cheese, Mushroom, and Sweet Plantain option I ended up going back about half an hour later to grab the Bean as well. These are frozen, pre-cooked, and DELICIOUS. Will have to make it up to Portland soon to eat from the restaurant.
The food is delicious and staff was well aware of what is vegan and vegan friendly on the menu. She explained the options to us and we were really happy with the food. It’s also a really cute place and with a casual vibe.
The photos and reviews looked great; however, I ordered two arepas for $43, and this was one of the most disappointing meals I've had. One of the arepas was full of bland and burned chicken. The sweet and spicy sauce tasted like ketchup and sweet relish. Maybe the cook was having a bad night? I don't know. There are too many other consistently good places to risk another disappointment here. -_-
Hate leaving bad reviews for independently-owned family businesses, and I hope this was just a bad night in the kitchen for their sake.

Save yourself the money and time- I wasted mine for you. $20 for burnt flavorless chicken, dry beans, and a side of sauce made with ketchup and relish. No good, no good.

I've eaten arepas in Bogotá, Colombia; Spain, Miami, Chicago, even in Minnessota. Thus, I was excited to find them in Portland.Unfortunately, these arepas fell short of my expectations.
While the arepas were generously filled with meat, the overall taste was distinctly different from what I'm accustomed to. If you're new to arepas, you might enjoy them, but for seasoned arepa lovers, this place might disappoint.
Additionally, the prices are quite high. A side of maduro, for example, costs $12.95. Same side dish in Colombian Miami restaurants go for 6 to 8 dollars. You can get a plantain for 89 cents at Hannaford's. Then a pound of cheese (queso fresco) might run you less than 6 bucks and it will go with a few maduros.
Overall, this place is a mixed bag. If you're new to arepas, it's worth a try. However, for those who are familiar with authentic arepas, I'd recommend exploring other options.

We stop twice at Maiz a year (at least) on our way to Acadia. The food is always amazing and totally gluten-free which is essential for me! The staff is always awesome too!!

The food here was incredible! Stopped in for a quick bite; I got chicken, my husband got pork -- maybe it was the other way around, but I lost track; we traded bites for a few rounds, until we just hunched over our plates in gluttonous silence. Perfectly crispy corn arepas, filled with melty cheese and tender, flavorful meat (if you want meat!) and a healthy dose of pico -- if all that were not enough to recommend it, I will add that, as a garlic afficionado, I would happily eat their garlic sauce by the spoonful, although that would probably eventually kill me. (I would die happy.) There were so many options on the menu that sounded amazing, so we just picked the "basico," but I don't think we could have been disappointed by any of the choices! I'll have to bring my kids soon so we can try more of the menu!

Small little Colombian street food style Cafe in Portland.
The arepas are excellent and quite generous in size. One will fill you up, no worries. Had one of their fresh fruit juices, highly recommend.
Small seating area, quick service, bathroom available, lovely staff on my visit. Would definitely come again.

Awesome arepas! The portions are nice and big so you don’t need to order multiple. Flavors were great with lots of sauce options. Staff was friendly. Will 100% come back again!!
