I was visiting Portland for the African Festival event, and decided that I would extend my African experience beforehand by eating lunch at the Red Sea Restaurant. It's a small, welcoming place, and the staff are very friendly. I felt welcomed to experience Ethiopian and Eritrean culture through their food. The food is served without silverware, although you can ask for silverware if needed. I ordered what are vegetarian options: Fava ful and Red lentil stew...very tasty. You can ask for more or less spice, depending on your taste.
If you are a coffee drinker, and especially if you are a coffee afficionado, I highly recommend their coffee! It takes a while to prepare, but it is well worth the wait! If I could, I would come every day just for the coffee.

Really delicious food, wait was not very long. The beef, lamb, and chicken were all prepared and seasoned perfectly. The waitresses were very kind and helpful.

A nice, little spot with amazing food. Their veggie platter is delicious and generous, the lentil sambusa was fresh and so good, and the service was warm and welcoming. Excellent all around. All homemade by the wife of the couple who own the restaurant.
The food is absolutely EXQUISITE. If you don’t know what to order, bring a friend and either get the meat platter or vegetarian platter for two so you can try everything…because EVERYTHING on the menu is so good. The service is always excellent. The portions are GENEROUS. You can taste the care and love in every bite. You won’t leave unsatisfied- I never have.
Thanks to the employees for all their hard work. It’s always such a pleasure to go here.

This family owned restaurant is one of our local favorites. Completely unpretentious and always consistent. The food is fresh and perfectly spiced. We usually share the vegetarian sampler. Highly recommended!

The worst customer service ever! The food is great and I wouldn’t have even spent my money with them if I didn’t love the food that much. They seriously do not know what customer service is. The portions are also really small.

If you love bread and you've never had Injera, eat here. If you love Ethiopian food and don't know Eritrea is right next door, eat here. If you love richly spiced South Asian food, eat here for a different take on some familiar and new spices. If you love to share your meals with friends, eat here. If you want to dine alone and come away very well fed, eat here. Just eat here.

One of the most friendly and welcoming restaurants I’ve ever been to. The food is excellent, lots of vegan and vegetarian options, too. Had some great conversations with the owners who make you feel at home. Highly recommend and I’m glad to be close to this place as it’ll become a go-to in my neighborhood rotation.

We've dined at probably a dozen Eritrean/Ethiopian in NYC/DC/Vegas and this ranks up there as one of our favorites. The meats and veggies were perfectly seasoned. The spice was at the right level for us (ethnic medium-level spiciness). Our server (an owner(?)) was friendly. He was kind enough to let us know we were ordering too much which we really appreciate.
We will definitely be returning the next time we're back in Portland.
