This place is amazing! Best Chinese food in town! The drinks were fresh and unique. The food was absolutely delicious and a large portion size. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. If you haven’t tried it, get there you wont be disappointed.

There are not enough positive words in the English language to fully capture my gratitude for this restaurant. After being diagnosed with Celiac disease, I had to come to terms with the fact that there is so much food I'd never be able to eat again without a reaction. However, Zen Chinese Bistro reversed the curse for Chinese food.
I stumbled upon their website and was almost dumbfounded when I saw they offered gluten-free dishes. A bigger surprise came when I read the comments from other individuals who have the same dietary restrictions who praised Zen for their stringent policies and assortment of safe dishes.
It was only a matter of time when on a day trip I got to eat here myself and experience it all first hand.
Our group showed up a little early and came back once the dinner service started. Since we were a group of five adults, there was a brief wait while the upstairs was set up. The first floor has a bar with several smaller tables, which is perfect for solo or couples. Upstairs is a large U-shape that overlooks the lower floor and has views of the surrounding area. While they do not have their own parking lot, there are many public lots in the city which are a couple of minutes walk away.
No need to ask for a dedicated gluten-free menu because all dishes are clearly labeled and made that way without needing to be asked. This was the first time in years I had more choices than a salad, and I even had to chance to sample other dishes friends ordered without hesitation. Portions are plentiful, and we ended up taking some of it home, so I had a second meal from our dinner.
The service was outstanding, and our server was attentive and answered all questions completely. She made our experience outstanding, and I look forward to coming back to Zen when in Portland.

Dietary restrictions: Plenty if options for gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan dishes.

I have lived in Portland my entire life and had never been here. We came in and decided to dine in. The resturant is so nice and well decorated. The bar area is beautiful. The service was fantastic, and the food was phenomenal. The portions are also very large, it was nice to have left overs for lunch the next day. Will definitely be back!

You want overpriced and decent food that will only give you a little knot in your stomach? you nailed it.
Serious, it is good food for what you would expect... service has tanked ever since they have hired some new help. But I guess you get what you pay for.
If you order take out, you need to open it up and check it right there in the store 4/10 times you don't get a item, a side or extra sauce.... even though you paid for it.

I came here to buy sesame beef. You can have it with white rice or brown rice. The portion is great and it's also very delicious. They open every day for take outs and deliveries but dine-in is available only 4 days a week after 5 pm.

I only had take out but it was very good. I ordered the Szechuen Tofu, not quite as spicy as i thought it might be but im a medium hot person so it was really nice. Had Beef and Ginger, also really nice with fresh mini bok choys, a great touch. Chicken on Fired noodles also quite authentic. So a very good standard and I would certainly recommend for take out.

While on a trip to Portland we decided to try this restaurant. The greater was very pleasant as well as our waitress. The overall environment seemed gloomy. We were seated and we had one plate that was broken, another with a hair on it. We git those swapped out and the waitress brought us our water. Three glasses out of four had stuff floating in the water. The waitress brought us different glasses. Two of us order Pepsi that did not taste like Pepsi. At this point we decided to pay for the drinks and leave.

Lately it’s been hard to find good Chinese food in the state of Maine since it’s become awash with lobster and clam chowder but DAMN this place was good. The beef skewers, chicken wings, my guy General Tso and his jasmine rice was to die for. I particularly enjoyed the baklava at the end. It tasted all the more sweet because it was complimentary. Defo recommend. 10/10.

Ordered for my first time yesterday. So thankful for another gluten free option in Portland. The orange chicken might be the best I’ve ever had (GF and non). Beef teriyaki also very good. Will be coming back!
