Tiny bakery on Clark St near Danforth. Divine croissants! Choc croissant best in world! My fav breads are Rustic, Buckwheat, 60% Wheat.
Love love love candied orange brioche rolls sliced with cheese spread, cream cheese, butter, marmalade or apricot jam! Always find a parking spot but might have to walk a couple blocks! Well worth it!!
One of the best bakeries I’ve ever visited world wide
Amazing cardamom palmier, immaculate vibes
ZU is one of the bakeries that makes me rate Portland as the #2 bakery city in the world after Paris. No joke. It’s amazing!
My wife says it's the best chocolate croissant she's ever had. I think it was pretty good too.
One of the BEST BAKERY’s in Portland. Everytime I visit Maine it’s a must do stop and stock while I’m in town and th last stop re-stock to take items home just to tease and taunt the Airline passengers with Zu wonderful smelling Breads & pastries.
THE best. Period.
Best bakery in town. Don't tell anyone!
Small bakery with pastries and breads. They're very popular, which meant a limited selection by the end of day. Staff were very friendly
I didn’t know bread and pastries could mean so much to me until I tried ZUbakery. It is perfect. I love you, ZUbakery.
The wheat bread was outstanding. The crust had just the right amount of crunch and the crumb was perfect. We torn it into pieces and ate it in the car - that good. Coffee is excellent - drink it black. We also had the Irish scone - black currents were delicious.

I can’t comment on the bread as they’ve always run out by the time I get there but the BROWNIES are perfect for adults. Not too sweet, with visible sea salt flakes. I rarely eat sweets (even Tandem’s baked goods are too sweet for me) but this was PERFECTION!
Amazing!! We got an Irish currant scone, a ham and cheese croissant and a chocolate croissant and each was equally delicious! I would highly recommend! Plus, the man that helped us was super nice and pleasant. We will be back again when in the area!
I visited ZuBakery 4 times in a row while visiting Portland this week. This bakery places a strong emphasis on the quality of the dough and their efforts are well reflected in the wonderful texture of the bread and sweet smell of yeast.
The apple galette is phenomenal. The apples on top are beautifully caramelized and not soggy (!). The crust is the best part and it is perfect; light and crunchy, but yet retains its structure and texture.
I had their ham and cheese croissant and it is excellent. This is not a butter heavy (I am sure a lot of butter goes in here, but you know what I mean) croissant where everything is impossibly buttery. And no, this is a not an airpocket filled croissant (horror) with a rockhard (or) sad droopy shell.
The outer shell is light and crispy. The quality of the dough really shines in the inner layers of the croissant-- the flavor of the dough comes forward and it is so delightful. Ham and cheese are generously added, and they are of a good quality.
Currant scone.. wasn't my favorite. Too dry.
Challah (Fridays only) was very good. It is dense (as it should) and the texture is on point. Flavor-wise, it is not sweet at all. (Personally, I like slightly sweeter challah).
If I had more time in Portland, I would have tried out their fresh baguettes... maybe next time.
Lastly, what the other reviewers say is true. They sell out quickly.. within 30min of the bakery opening time, crowd favorites are gone.

I’ve lived in Paris, I’ve lived in NYC, but this was by FAR the best pain au raisin and pain au chocolat I’ve ever had. I don’t even like pain au raisin—it just looked that good! I’ve been thinking about it everyday since… Everything is so unbelievably fresh, pulled right off the bakery cart and still warm. Cute little selection of wines too…

Hands down worth the wait and a huge high point in our visit to Portland. Wonderful baked goods and customer service. Very smooth and quick line. Loved every second of the croissant and the scone so beautiful and simple but creative and rich. One of my favorite bakery experiences in the east coast.
