One day before reopening after the Covid closure, John A. Lau burned to the ground this past week. This was after $40,000 in renovations and preparing for reopening with $10,000 worth of food. The Thunder Bay Theater next door was spared with minor damage.
UPDATE: We tried them again (not a lot of choices in Alpena I’m afraid) and big changes have clearly happened with both the menu and the service. They’re the only place in town that does crab legs, and I had a craving. I’m glad we tried them again! Service was fantastic! Shoutout to Steve, who was funny, fast and attentive. Waited on dinner longer than I'm used to. I think I heard our food was almost out 4 times before it came. Waiter was new, so it could have been that. Lobster roll was good but not really a lobster roll. Fries were dried out from either being frozen/baked or setting around. My wife was happy with her crab legs. Cool building. I will give it another try next time I'm in town because the menu is filled with things that sound great.
