For my last night in Detroit I braved the windy rainy weather to trek over from the Ren Cen to the downtown Maru for a solo dinner—and I really lucked out. I was still in time for happy hour with its reduced prices, so I went for it! I ordered a couple of glasses of house white, which was quite good (not always the case w/ house wines). I then supped, first on an order of chicken gyoza, which was really large (esp for such a low price). Then I ordered the Crouching Tiger roll, which was also quite generous in size, especially at the happy hour price. I'd wanted to try some other items, but my appetite was more than satisfied after the roll, so I hadda call it a night. Recommend Maru for happy hour w/o hesitation. The vibe is urban casual with a mostly youngish crowd, but comfortable for any age.

This place cancelled my pick up order 40 minutes after they accepted the order, when I was ready to pick it up. Don’t accept it if you aren’t going to complete it.

Had a really great meal here. With some random luck, popped in while jt was considered happy hour and the signature rolls were 40% off. The Soy Joy roll was our best one. Delicious!

Staying at a hotel in this area for a conference, the empty streets and closed storefronts were less than inviting. Fortunately we found this place. The sashimi and rolls were excellent. So was the service and the decor. Strongly recommended.

My husband and I had an impromptu date night, mid week, to check out the lights and Cadillac square. We decided to eat at Maru. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us at the bar (6pm ish). We ordered the recommended drinks and our bartender's and server's favorites. Everything was delicious and the experience was great overall.

Arrived for my reservation on time and told it would be a few minutes. The hostess directed us to the lobby of the building to wait where there was no place to sit. As there were 2 dozen empty chairs visible in the restaurant, I asked if my date and I could wait seated at on of the occupied tables. “No” was the answer. The food and the waitress were very good; but, what an inhospitable front-end!

I reserved for 9:30 yesterday for 5 people. When I arrived at around 9:25 I was told we are already signed in and out table is full (meaning they gave our reservation to someone else that wasn't us). I said how is that possible and showed her the reservation on my phone because she didn't seem like she believed me. Then she told us to wait outside in the hallway while we figure out the situation. So there we are, me and my family waiting outside for 15 minutes.. My aunt goes in and asks for an update, and then they respond well you didn't even reserve correctly, you reserved for 3 and there are 5 of you so we are trying to get a table ready. So my aunt comes and tells me that they are claiming I reserved for 3. So I went inside and showed her, that I reserved for 5 on my confirmation email, then she responds whatever the table is almost ready now. I said, what do you mean whatever, you make me look d*** to my aunt, and you make us wait for 20-30 minutes past our reservation and instead of an apology we are told we reserved incorrectly when we DIDN'T and you gave our reservation away, then a young african man claiming to be a manager tells us hey i'm the manager if you continue raising your voice at my hostess i'm going to kick you guys out. So needless to say I will never be here again. Please train your employees better because that was the worst experience I ever had in a restaurant.

It’s a stylish joint! Surprisingly limited menu for a sushi place. It’s inside a huge building, but on the sidewalk level. As to be expected in this area, it’s very pricey. Very good service. Modern atmosphere.

I took my mother here for Mother's Day and the staff was absolutely amazing! They saved us a really cute booth which I thought was very thoughtful! It was our first time and we had an amazing experience. Our server drew was great! He was very welcoming, helpful, attentive and gave us the perfect amount of space while keeping a close eye on us. The woman who greeted us was so welcoming and sweet as well, but I did not get her name. Appetizers and sushi were wonderful and plated well. My only negative was our hibachi steak was a little under heated. It seems like they probably sous vide and it just wasn't quite warm by the time it reached us. However, the service and rest of our meal was absolutely fantastic and we will be back. Little things happen!

The sushi here was one of the best I have ever had. I was impressed by the service and plan on going back again for sure!

Worst service I've ever has at a restaurant. Will never return. My husband and I left after one round of drinks and an appetizer. The manager Toby didn't apologize once and reserved the same appetizer we sent back as a result of having no soy sauce for 5 minutes and the seared salmon belly nigiri was now cold. Coming from an employee who used to work at the East Lansing Maru, this is not the service I would ever have been expected to provide to Maru patrons. The rudeness of the manager was so off-putting. Very sad.
