I recently had yet another very disappointing experience at Maru Sushi on Fort Street in Detroit. I arrived at the to-go counter and stood there for 10 minutes without any assistance. Despite multiple staff members seeing me, none offered help until I had to request it myself. When I finally asked if the restaurant was open and taking orders, the staff seemed shocked and made a joke about why they had been staring instead of helping me, which felt like an attempt to dismiss my concerns.
What was even more troubling was that shortly after my order was taken, a Caucasian woman came in and was immediately assisted by no less than two staff members. As an African American man who lives in Detroit, I find it disheartening that such treatment is still allowed, especially towards loyal customers.
The management, one of whom was sitting at the bar at the time, needs to look into better training for themselves and their staff to ensure that all customers are treated with the respect and prompt service they deserve.

Food was dank. Based on food alone would 100% come back. Unfortunately the service ruined the experienced. Before I go into it. I just want to say this girl was a sweetheart, and super nice, just maybe an inexperienced waitress. When I ordered a drink it took 15 minutes to come. I wanted another one but honestly just didn’t want to wait or cause more problems. The waitress charged us for an extra roll and missed somebody’s order. She was waiting 30 minutes for her missing roll to come. She made multiple mistakes on the bill and had to come back FOUR TIMES with the correct checks. She couldn’t remember what anybody ordered, and even when she asked she got it wrong. We stayed 2.5 hours in the restaurant. By the end, the bills were still incorrect and I just paid for other peoples food and drinks because I just wanted to leave. It felt like every time she came to the table something was wrong. A 1 hour dinner with friends took 2.5 hours and was super frustrating.

I’m not sure how it is possible on a Monday night that the service is so slow, the employees have outnumbered the guests the entire time I’ve sat at the bar. There are about 11 staff members and only 7 or less customers the whole hour plus I have been here. Yet, it has been an hour since I’ve sat and still haven’t received my main sushi roll order. How is this possible? Train the staff to actually pay attention to the guests, this is ridiculous.

if i could leave no stars i would. i have always loved maru and have visited the midland, mi location multiple times and never had an experience like this. arriving around open time the first red flag was a hair in our soy sauce. that was quickly remedied. after we order our food and i notice a sushi roll that we ordered sitting upon the bar next to a towel, i was unable to tell if it was dirty or clean. our first appetizer comes out and we are told it’s going to take 20 more minutes before our next one. why i have no idea our server didn’t check on us or update us at all. during this time we see our server constantly touching her face and hair then touch food and drinks. after i see the server try to serve us the sushi roll that had been sitting there since before we got our first appetizer (about 30 minutes at this point). we hadn’t even gotten the second appetizer and heard nothing about the status of it. so we just decided to leave. the food we did not receive was taken off of the bill but i did noticed we were overcharged for the meal i ordered. i ordered tofu (and it came out that way) on the receipt i was charged for shrimp. so now im wondering what changed from when my order was put in to the time we got the bill? i have never been so displeased and disappointed with service. this would never happen at the Midland location. we literally went around the corner to lafayette coney??

Terrible service. 0 stars if I could. Tried serving me food that had been sitting next to a towel since before our appetizer came out. Absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention the hair in our soy sauce and being overcharged for a meal. This location gives Maru a bad name

Unfortunately while the food was terrific, the experience was not. We arrived at 7:00pm for our friend's birthday dinner and were promptly seated, waitress came over for drink orders and app orders at 7:15/20pm. 7:55pm drinks come, 10-15 minutes later apps come. We place our order, 30 minutes later our waitress comes over to verify our order then finally puts it into the system. 15 minutes later we get our food. 9:50pm we finally pay our bill (with an added 20% gratuity for a party of 4) and can leave. Our waitress was sweet and apologetic, the restaurant max was only half full while we were there, only 25% full by the time we ordered food. Will not be back despite the delicious food.

I joined my family on a Monday evening for a birthday celebration. I drove over 40 minutes passing many reputable Sushi restaurants. My sisters dined at Maru before and was satisfied with their experience. I left there extremely disappointed in the quality and food and more important the poor service I received The manger came out to speak to me, and she made matters worse. Completely out of touch with how to respond to my concerns. She was even argumentative as I asked for my check to be settled. I sent the company an email and still no response. I did not even attempt to eat a single bite. What you see in the pic is what was presented to me. It was disappointing and not at all the level of quality displayed on Maru’s site. It took nearly 45 minutes to receive our entrees after ordering appetizers and drinks (non alcoholic). 10-15 minutes for the check, on a Monday, and it was not busy. I left frustrated , hungry and disappointed.

A great sushi place with a sophisticated feel. The service was friendly, seating was quick, wasabi was spicy but not too much, and the atmosphere relaxing and comfortable. I enjoyed the rolls and the sashimi, although the slices on the sashimi were a little slim.

Delicious food. Quite a few vegetarian tasty options. Fried spicy tofu, signature sushi rolls. Archer was the best. Yaki Udan with spicy sauce
