I lived in Detroit for years. Moved away, came back for my mom 100 birthday. Passed by for 5 days, we could never find parking. I came back 2 months later and my only stop beside seeing my mom was to try a piece of Detroit in a pie crust. Let me tell ya'll, secrets hide in plain site.
I travel to Cleveland for kims, Detroit for the fall markets, breakfast and chili dogs at Leda's, corn beef sandwich, and corn beef rolls at bread basket. Now, sweet potato sensations. Don't forget to try the German chocolate cake. I have a piece in the freezer for the night of Thanksgiving.

It's often busy, so if you are there during peak times, expect to wait in line, but it's so worth it. This is a family business and a Detroit TREASURE. The food is great, the pies are legendary, and honestly, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Truly a place that gives flavor and gives back to its community. You feel the love even while just chatting with the folks in line. This is my happy place!

The young lady at the counter wasn't very friendly or engaging. Like we were bothering her. The black-eyed pea and collard green soup was mid could have thicker. Sweet Potato 🥔 Pie was delicious 😋 though. I also bought a bar of black soap. Very good product.
I really enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere. And the boutique/novelty shop was definitely a plus! I had the fried turkey chops, sweet potato pancakes, grits and a ginger peach tea. The grits were surprisingly tasty! Just try it ?

Tried the pecan sweet potato pie and it was terrible, no flavor or sugar, I had to check to make sure it wasn't the diabetic version.

My family and I JUST finished our meals from SPS.
I ordered the catfish dinner with mac n cheese and greens. The catfish was fried perfectly. It was meaty, tender, with a nice flavor. The Mac and cheese had the perfect balance of cheesy and creaminess. The greens were just perfect; tender, not overly seasoned.
My husband had the turkey chops, rice n gravy, and fried corn. His only disappointment was in the scarce gravy on his rice. Other than that, he enjoyed the meal. I tasted his fried corn and it was a beautiful infused of sweet and light spice (I’m ordering that next time).
My son got the wings and the same sides as me.
Overall we enjoyed the meal. The sweet potato muffins were a nice treat. We also grabbed two pies; coconut sweet potato and pecan sweet potato. Oooh the pecan one was just toooo good!
Always have fresh sweet potato pies.
