Raterman Bread House & Bistro: Good Vibes, Okay Bread

Raterman Bread House & Bistro in Dexter has a really nice atmosphere. It's the kind of place you could easily hang out with friends for a meal, especially if the weather is nice and you can enjoy their outdoor seating.

We tried the pizza, and it was quite good – definitely a solid choice. However, the bread, which I was particularly looking forward to given the name, was just okay. It didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I've had better sourdough elsewhere; this one was a little bit bland and didn't have that signature tang I was expecting.

Despite the bread not being a standout, I still enjoyed the overall experience. The ambiance is welcoming, and the pizza was tasty. I'd probably come back with friends for a casual hangout and a meal, especially if we're looking for a relaxed spot with a good vibe.

Everything I've tried here has been excellent, from the pizza to the power bowls to the bread, pretzels, and olive twists! High quality ingredients make for delicious meals and the extensive vegan menu is great! I highly recommend it!

Delicious pizzas, made with great sourdough. Friendly service. There will be a bit of a wait for your pizza. But you can hang out in the Erratic Ale brewery, that's connected. These are not for kids pizzas.

This review is only about the multigrain bread which I have been buying for years. It used to be the only truly German style bread in the area. The crust was hard and crunchy and the bread was dense. Just bought a loaf today and it was nothing like the old recipe. It was soft and spongey like any other commercial bread you can buy at any grocery chain. Will no longer buy this bread and will miss the old truly rustic, substantial version. Have to wonder why they changed the multigrain bread.

Went to buy Bread and came back for pizza the next time ! Great food !

Raterman’s has completely vegan menus and lots of choices so ordering is easy. One of my all-time favorite sandwiches ever is their vegan “figgy piggy “ which is a marinated Tempeh sandwich using high quality, local Tempeh, fig preserves, vegan Feta, Red Wine Vinegar Pickled Red Onions, and Cilantro Microgreens! Don’t let the name turn you off. My understanding is that it’s a playoff of their meat sandwich. And, while you’re there, pick up a loaf of bread as it is incredible! If you like a doughy pizza, you will also enjoy their pizza. Everything there is good! Do allow plenty of time or order in advance as the food takes a while to get prepared. Also, know that there are only a couple of tables, but they have an agreement with the brewery on the other side of the entryway, so it’s fine to take your food over there and enjoy it. 

This place is top notch for food and bread. Has a lot of vegan options. Seating is limited but you can sit next door

I arrived ~30 minutes after opening and there was a line. About a 5-10 minute wait to order my meal and bread loaf. Another 10 minutes for food.

The ordering for bread and meals happens on the right side. If eating in, you can go sit in the Bistro area next door (to the left). You are given a buzzer that will alert you when you food is ready.

I got the Figgy Piggy Sandwich, so delicious!! Bacon, goat cheese, fig jam, micro greens, and pickled onions on grilled sourdough.

I also picked up a loaf of Fig & Pecan Bread and a Cheese Twist. The pretzels looked amazing also.

Small ordering area but the Bistro area is larger. During warmer months there is outdoor seating.

BTW: the Scottish Fruit bread is available in the spring😞

Online ordering is available for food. I did NOT see an option for pre-ordering bread loaves but that could be via phone/email.

We have only ordered twice so far but each time the food was DELICIOUS! We ordered the pizza (standard red sauce, traditional cheese blend, pepperoni, sweet peppers, grated parmesan, and sourdough crust). There are many options for sauces, cheeses, and toppings. Most of these options are artisan. The ingredients are all of the highest quality and the dough is made from scratch. There are a couple items to note. First, there is only seating at the bar next door. This is great if you plan on having a few drinks but in general this is awkward. Second, the online menu offers sides of ranch dressing. This is not your traditional ranch, it is a garlic and dill creation that is more akin to a green goddess dressing. My wife liked it, I did not. It was a letdown for me because the pizza crust is chewy and delicious and I looked forward to some ranch to dip it in. If the online menu indicated what it actually was, I wouldn't have ordered it and saved a couple dollars. Overall, I would recommend Raterman's and I look forward to trying more of their offerings.

Amazing bakery to grab bread to take home!

A local fave! My husband and I are vegan and so thrilled to have this option for delicious pizza, sandwiches, and bowls. The loaves are fantastic and they also have gluten free options. We recently got one of their gluten free pizzas for a friend who is gf and she said it was the BEST gluten free pizza she has ever had. We always bring family, guests, and out of towners here. Something for everyone and a great location.
