The food here was great, but our waiter Ryan Johnson completely ruined the experience. From the moment we walked in, he harassed us about tipping before we even sat down, and after the meal he aggressively demanded a 20% tip, even trying to charge me for a bill that wasn’t mine. When we refused, he chased us out of the restaurant yelling not to come back. His behavior was hostile, unprofessional, and felt racially motivated — he didn’t treat anyone else in the restaurant that way. Ryan Johnson is a disrespectful, racist waiter who has no business working in customer service.

As soon as we walked into Toba Sushi and Grill, our experience was ruined by our waiter, Ryan Johnson. Before we even had a chance to sit down, he immediately started harassing us about tipping, which felt extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable.
The food itself was amazing – fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared – but unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed it. Throughout our meal, Ryan was rude and disrespectful. After we finished eating, he came to our table and demanded that we tip him, lecturing us about paying a 20% gratuity as if it was mandatory. To make matters worse, he seemed to confuse me for another customer and tried to get me to tip for a bill that wasn’t even mine, in addition to the one I actually had.
When we refused to tip because of his behavior, we paid for our meal and prepared to leave, but he actually chased us out the door, yelling down the street, “Don’t come back! Don’t ever come back!” His behavior was shocking, completely unprofessional, and humiliating.
I don’t know if this treatment was personal, or even racially motivated, but I did notice he didn’t speak to any other customers in the restaurant that way. Regardless, no one should be treated with such hostility when dining out.
Bottom line: the food was excellent, but Ryan Johnson’s disrespectful and aggressive behavior made this one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had

The food was mid at best. If in Kalamazoo I almost always go to Toba however, not the Drake location. It just happened to be closer last night, but it was so bad last night. I threw an entire roll away because it was cut so badly and the tuna left a meaty paste smeared across each cut from the roll. 0/10 appetizing to look at and did not taste good. This was the tuna, shrimp tempura and avocado roll. My partner said their vegetarian rolls were just okay. We also got side salads and the spinach tasted dirty. We literally picked out all the pieces so we could eat them.

This place was perfect, absolutely loved the food. Just the flavor in the basic rolls is amazing; the karanagi burrito was packed with flavor and paired with the spicy mayo was such a great combo. Aidan was a great, informative, and friendly waiter. I am 100% going again.
