We were up visiting from the TC area. Great time to get away from the city. Stopped at this cute little spot with an amazing view. Service was amazing. Food was even better. We enjoyed the lake trout and the pasta and salad. The vinaigrette dressing was the best we’ve ever had. We also really enjoyed the salmon chowder. Little bland for flavor on the chowder, but was nice and hearty. Just feedback, not a complaint. Friendly staff and open kitchen, so you can see what’s going on. Loved the setup.

Food is delicious, staff are so nice, and the place is outfitted with locally sourced art, including their furniture. It’s beautiful. Also spectacular views and outdoor seating.

A couple of friends and I visited the Angry Trout after our trip to the Boundary Waters in July. It was extremely busy and we had to wait at least a half hour, so we were hoping it would live up to the local hype.

We were seated at the back patio and had a great view of the harbor. The restaurant was extremely cozy and the staff was very welcoming. We shared the fried shiitake mushrooms to start (delicious) and I ordered the grilled fish of the day, which was white fish. The fish was fresh, waffle fries were great, and the vegetables/salad were a great addition.

I am not a fan of the mandatory 20% service charge, but the servings were sizable and I really had no other complaints. Don't let the wait discourage you from visiting - it is easy to kill time walking around the nearby shops/bars downtown.

What an amazing spot on the water. The wild rice salad was so warm and perfectly cooked. I had their GF whitefish chowder one day and their GF hamburger the next. The swedish cream lingdonberry dessert was divine! I brought home some of their amazing salad dressing too. I visited just before their fall break and the staff was attentive and the food came quickly. Be sure to stop here in Grand Marais!

Beautiful view, frustrating rules.
Gorgeous lakefront setting and mostly friendly staff, but rigid house policies and bland chowder keep this from being a five-star experience.

Had I known about Angry Trout’s policies, I wouldn’t have dined there. A 20% tip is mandatory and automatically added with zero option to leave less — only to tip more. No free refills on coffee, tea, or soft drinks, and they won’t seat you until your full party is standing at the hostess station. It’s clear: the customer comes second and turning tables comes first.

That said, we still enjoyed ourselves. The salmon chowder ($16), however, was like warm, flavorless water with barely any salmon or seasoning — as if watered down to stretch through lunch.

What makes Angry Trout stand out is location, location, location — right on the shore of Lake Superior. Dining outdoors on the rocks makes the experience special, and it’s likely why they can get away with their “they come first” policies.

Friendly staff and a charming, local vibe keep it from being a total miss. Without those strict policies, this could easily be a five-star spot.

Need to add a service charge because the servers are the most rude, unenjoyable people ever!!!! I wish I could take that 20% service charge and give it to a person that actually enjoys life. My family and I have been coming here for years, no more. Get out of the service industry if you don’t like your job. You ruined our over priced lunch.

I’ll begin with where it begins: the walk up to the restaurant—yes even that is 5 stars. And then incredible hosts with a very painless process for waiting (we waited about 10-15 minutes), including a text right to your phone if you want to walk around a bit.

We ordered a cup of soup to share (salmon and trout chowder) which was incredible. We then ordered the fish and chips and the fish tacos and we will be thinking of those for some time to come. The fish tacos had enough fish on them to really fill you up, and the taste was outstanding.

The fish and chips likewise, with the breading not being heavy or greasy, but the fish flaky and delicious. Waffle fries seasoned perfectly, and the house made tartar sauce is exquisite!

We will definitely be back on our next trip to Grand Marais! It’s a must-stop-at. I imagine the patio in the warmer months is lovely as well!

Last; the small touches such as local art for every part of the restaurant (down to the door, tables and chairs, and pottery for dishes!) made it feel extra homey. All of those details are on the menu!

Stopped at Angry Trout while in Grand Marais — you really can’t beat the location. Outdoor seating right on Lake Superior makes the experience special all by itself.

I had the trout chowder and a salad. Both were fresh and well made. The chowder had great flavor but could’ve used a little more fish, and I added some salt and pepper to bring it to life. The salad was crisp and fresh too, though the large-cut pieces made it a bit hard to eat. Dressings are homemade, which is nice, but they weren’t particularly memorable — just okay.

The staff was friendly and attentive, and overall, everything felt clean and locally minded. For me, the standout here is absolutely the setting and vibe — dining right on the water is hard to top.
