If you're visiting the North Shore, Naniboujou is an absolute must stop! ❤️ We went for breakfast on Saturday morning, and everything was wonderful. We had orange juice, fluffy pancakes with bacon, and the coffee was absolutely delicious.
What made our experience truly special, though, was the incredible service. Andrew and Cinthya were so warm, kind, and genuinely welcoming. They made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in, and their hospitality made our morning even more memorable ✨
I brought my lifelong best friend and her mom, who were visiting me from Chile, and this breakfast became one of those moments we'll always cherish.
100% recommended!
My wife and I chose a two-night stay at Naniboujou to celebrate our anniversary. It was preceded by a two-night, 20-mile hike in from the Lindskog Rd trailhead on the Superior Hiking Trail, having left our vehicle at the lodge and hired a shuttle to drop us at the trailhead.
The afternoon after we hiked in, the rain started in earnest. It was quite relaxing to sit in the little balcony under the solarium, listening to the rain on the glass while reading a coffee table book about much grander lodges in the national parks.
Our room was modest with a view of rolling lawns and trees leading to the lake. There is no need for A/C, but there's a fan available. The bathroom has a shower, not a tub, and I believe the fixtures were updated since we had stayed eight or so years ago (in the same room!).
As others have said, this place is old-school and hails to a simpler time. Just slow down and breathe. There's a long pebble/sand beach that becomes a spit out into the mouth of the Brule River, providing a sheltered eddy of flat water for skipping stones. Of course, Lake Superior offers a different mood every day and even half-day. There are plenty of outdoor chairs and tables (on a balcony and close to the beach) and horseshoe pits. Inside, there are puzzles, books, games, and tea and coffee.
The breakfast and dinner offerings were very satisfying, speaking as someone who had been eating trail food for a couple of days and knew ahead of time that personal choice and customization was not in the cards. Our last dinner was apricot-dijon chicken with roasted potatoes and another side. The waitstaff were three of the owner's grandkids; the one we chatted with is a third-year teacher working on his master's who couldn't resist coming back to spend the summer in such a special place.
Pardon the change of tone, but some of y'all need a few nights in a hermitage or monastery because the world is just getting to you. Naniboujou offers that kind of wind-down with the addition of some creature comforts.
I haven't mentioned sitting by the fireplace or the fact that the lodge is literally across the street from the state park and a short walk to Devil's Kettle. So it should appeal to almost anyone who is in the north country for what the north country offers.
4 of us came and had a great time with outstanding service. Problem was the fish was full of bones, 4-12 bones in each of the 4 meals
We had breakfast mid week. It was on my wish list since I was a kid, but I could never make it work.
There was pancakes and bacon, coffee and oranges. I would have eaten saltines and water with no complaints. The dining room is so beautiful. I kniw it is a Cree design, which isnt appropriate for northern minnesota, but it is such a joyful space, and has been so lovingly maintained.
The gentleman who served breakfast was also running the gift shop area. He is part of the family that owns the property. Due to staffing problems, they no longer offer lunch service. I hope that turns around.
We went there for lunch, but there was no lunch this year. They were graceful in explaining and letting is tour and photo. Until next time.
Visited the lodge in August 2025. The architecture is strikingly beautiful, and the view of the lake from the grounds is wonderful.
However, if you are staying at the lodge be aware that the room walls are paper thin: we were treated to all of the nighttime sounds our neighbors made, including snoring, talking, using the toilet and washing their hands. The neighbors weren’t noisy, it’s just that the walls provided very little protection.
We were also very disappointed with the Sunday breakfast. It was a self-serve buffet of granola, yogurt, sliced melon, and crescent rolls, along with paper plates and plastic cutlery. Disappointing considering the price charged for the included meals.
Lastly, be aware that there is no WiFi (which they disclose on the website) and also no usable cellular coverage for Verizon or T-Mobile within the building.
All the charms of an old building. Very good food.
We came for lunch and a walk around the property. Very impressed.
Such a cool place far from everything! Has a real Lynchian feel (Twin Peaks). I'm leaving a review 25 years after I was last there.
Extremely busy, but so beautiful to see!
Just ate there. Good food. Really cool atmosphere. Had a good club sandwich. The sour cream and onion burger was great. Nice atmosphere.
A memorable retreat with lovely staff and surroundings. Delicious food; being unplugged deepens the experience with everything.
We stopped for lunch
Good Lunch with good service! Nice area to be around in the summer.
Historic and downright beautiful lodge and dining room. The fireplace is huge and the fire warm, with couches to lounge and additional lounging available.
