This place is above the Gunflint Tavern. Not much for food upstairs, but the view and drinks were really good!

Careful - Your Racism is Showing One of the most disappointing service experiences of my life. Have been coming to Grand Marais for over 50 years to enjoy. A lifetime of joyful visits was grossly sullied today by the service my family received at gunflint rooftop tavern. My son, who chose to quietly spend his 21st birthday with his family, was asked for ID when he and his father placed their orders. This request was honored. Then from nowhere the bartender accused my very respectful son of having an attitude, as he stood there with his parents watching (no attitude was given). The next event will keep me from EVER placing foot in this establishment again. The bartender then began to mockingly speak to them in broken Spanish. A blatantly obvious racially motivated attempt to reduce and intimidate a customer. This was followed by the bartender warning us that “he will be keeping an eye on us”. An eye on what? 4 adults enjoying a cocktail? Ridiculous !! Unlike the bartender, my family was respectful of the environment and others uninvolved that were present. We quietly consumed our drinks, processing and discussing with each other … “Did that really just happen?” Yes - It did. Racism is alive and well at The Gunflint Rooftop Tavern. Our voice will be strong here and other review sites. Do not bring your business to this establishment . Do not support businesses that allow racially motivated negative treatment of clients !
Server took our order and we waited and waited while everyone around us who had arrived after us received their order. We finally asked the server about it, she checked with the kitchen who told her they had run out of the roasted cauliflower for one of our salads and had to roast more. Finally they arrived with the food, and the cauliflower was surprisingly cold, not freshly roasted. I had the beet and goat cheese salad. Lettuce was wilted and warm, likely having been sitting under the warming lights for awhile. The beets were crunchy like they had never been cooked. The 3rd person had a cheeseburger and it was unimpressive. The server never returned to check on our satisfaction. Worst service and restaurant meal we can remember. And on top of it, rest room was filthy.
Food was trash and the service was horrible
Drinks for the day, good view, good service. Dudes behind the bar were good and knowledgeable.

We waited 30 mins for a downstairs table, which we had no problem doing since the full dining menu is not available on the upstairs patio. But waiting more than 45 min for our order to get filled (1 vegan carrot curry soup, 1 falafel salad, 1 turkey wrap) was excessive, especially when 2 other tables around us were seated, served and recieved their bill before we even were served the soup! The server acted nonchalant about our concerns on the timing, saying when she gets buzzed she brings out food, there was nothing she could do about the delay. Based on the time it took others to get served, it was obvious she forgot to place our order in a timely fashion. Furthermore, when served (finally), she never apologized for our inconvenience, never once checked to see how our meal was. She brought the bill without prompting from us, not asking if we wanted any dessert or additional beverages. The food was good, but the server's attitude and time delay really detracted from the experience. We would have preferred she be honest, apologize that she forgot to place the order, and we would have been fine. We know mistakes happen, but the lack of accountability and customer service was totally unacceptable.
I never leave negative reviews but I had to for this place. We waited for our table at the rooftop bar and had a drink on a rainy afternoon, the drinks were good. But after a very long wait for a table for two, we both ordered the vegan chili, and after waiting at least 30 minutes or more we contemplated leaving. Boy I wish we had, but we were tired and hungry and had already waited for a long time. The “chili” was like old dried up bean dip with giant chunks of carrots, and a dollop of tasteless guacamole and some sour cream, and some enormous hunks of red onion slices. For them to sent that out of the kitchen as chili is a joke! We ate part of it and left without saying anything, knowing it would have taken forever to get anything else. I’d avoid it like the plague!
We ate dinner here on 6/3/22.We had the vegan chili (excellent), cheddar brocolli soup (very good) ,grilled walleye sandwiches (very good) with blue corn chip and house made potato chips (both very good). The total for an appetizer, soup, a glass of wine, a soda, two walleye sandwiches and without a tip was $81.00. Our server was friendly and efficient We would eat here again. Notes: The is a 4% surcharge if you pay with a credit card versus paying with cash. Parking is on the street in front of or in the lot across from the restaurant.
Restaurantji Recommends
I ate at a gun flint restaurant at the end of the gun Flint Trail about four or five years ago with my wife and that was fantastic and it was about a hours drive from Grand Marais but this Gunflint restaurant for tavern is right in the town. I had ziti with a side salad and two bells IPAs and with tax it was 32 bucks plus tip. I am staying at the hungry hippie hostel in another gentleman in the room next to me was playing the guitar and singing at the restaurant tonight really cool to meet such type of people.
We ate at the Gunflint Tavern and Brewpub tonight lion our mini anniversary trip. I had the Rice Bowl with grilled shrimp and scallops and my husband had the Grilled Walleye Sandwich. The seafood was very fresh and perfectly cooked. We had an absolutely amazing server who made great recommendations and we really enjoyed the experience. Very eclectic menu with incredible food and an extensive tap, cocktail and wine menu. Don't miss this place!
We’ve come to GM for 25 years and always eaten at Gunflint. It’s been going downhill, in my opinion, for a few years. This year will be the last. Note on menu, “this ain’t your Momma’s kitchen, don’t taste and send back.” Or similar wording. I ordered a smoky margarita, which is the worst drink I’ve ever had. It was weak, and made with some carbonated water. I don’t drink anything fizzy. My hamburger was very so so. The waitress offered to get me another drink, but with the caution on the menu, I was remiss to do so. An attentive waitperson would have taken it and brought a “normal” drink. It was really, really strange. Food menu has changed a lot, and not for the better. It is so sad to write this, but it’s in hoping improvements are still possible. Trying too hard to be different.
We were very early for dinner but we arrived in Grand Marais famished. We saw the Gun Flint Tavern was highly rated on Trip Advisor so we headed there. Drats - a sign on the door said Closed Until Further Notice. We assumed it was closed due to COVID, like many of the places we’ve encountered on our road trip thru this neck of the woods, We did a bit of exploring in this cute little town and when we got back to our car, we saw the restaurant was open! Hooray! I started my meal with a very delicious Raven’s Lemonade. It’s Absolute Citron and Lemonade with a float of Blueberry Tattersall (Tattersall is apparently unique to Minnesota). Yum! The Potstickers Appetizer was more than enough for my entree and very yummy. Service was excellent. Music was a little loud and atmosphere was more bar like than fine dining but the cocktail, food and service were tres magnifique!
We had the walleye fajitas and walleye sandwich. Neither meal was good and below average. The walleye was ok, but all the fixings that came with the fajitas were not. The tortillas were stale, very little cheese, and it was like someone opened a can of black beans and poured them over the top. There was very little taste. The walleye sandwich was also bland, came without tartar sauce and the bun was soggy. It was served with broken tortillas chips that were covered in canned cheese sauce. It was all very strange. We would not eat there again, but there are very few options on a Monday evening in Grand Marais. We stopped to get ice cream at DQ afterwards and wished that we had either there instead of paying what we did for our poor meal.
