Oh my gosh, best food I've had in a long time! Simply phenomenal!

It started good, what happen? The bar stuff is still great! The food was better last times. The vegetarian "gallo" pasta dish was salty and overly spiced. The rest was okay but there are so many better options in the Twin Cities. The manager showed up at the table like a ghost and took my wine glass with wine still in it, without asking or making eye contact. The waiter was kind and made up for it. Mistakes happen but micromanaging the staff doesn't make a pleasant atmosphere.

Super impressed by our experience with wait staff, this place is absolutely adorable, and the food was very impressive. We loved the drink menu with so many options for N/A drinkers, too. Being able to pop next door and buy items we enjoyed at dinner to take home was a delight.

We were excited to try this spot out but unfortunately we were a bit disappointed. The salad and squash were good! We didn’t like the pork pasta dish and service felt a bit rushed. I also found a piece of plastic in my cocktail.I think we probably ordered wrong and I’m sure the cocktail issue was a fluke. Give it a shot if you like the vibe and the menu sounds good.

Wow! This is just an easy 10 out of 10 straight across-the-board! One of my new favorites, if not my new favorite! We sat at the bar, such a great atmosphere especially being able to watch the kitchen a little bit. Thomas, who I believe was the manager was fantastic and you can tell it is a really well ran establishment. And everyone that works there actually looked happy! Our bartender/server was amazing and the food was just spectacular! Sooooo good. Thank you thank you!

The food is delicious here! Incredible care is put into each meal and they come up with unique and tasty food combinations. Service is great and it's a really nice atmosphere. Also, they can accommodate most allergies, even when severe!

My friend and I had a fantastic meal here for dinner. I want to bring so many of my foodie friends back.We were sat immediately for our 2 person reservation, which is what I like to have happen for a reso! Good job to them on that! The lighting was on point - not too dark but a really nice low dinner ambiance. The decor is clean but welcoming, and the shape of the bar inside really makes the whole dining room pop. You get a peek into the kitchen from the dining room, but in a good way. I could see the line cooks tasting from spoons as they cooked, which is such a good sign. If a chef/cook is tasting as they go, I know they are salting the dishes appropriately and I can expect the culinary experience I'm wanting. The seasonal full proof cocktail I had was delicous. Perfectly balanced and very well executed overall. The ricotta toast, gorgonzola crispy potatoes, and creste de gallo pasta were all very good. The white puttanesca was nice too, but I think for what you're paying and me wanting a dining out experience, there are more interesting options that I wouldn't make at home (which is part of the appeal of going out!).I'm always a little skeptical of a newer restaurant, but this left me knowing they have great management so far and an executive chef and bar manager that know what they're doing.I wish I had some photos but I was having such a good time I didn't have my phone out.

In a word- amazing. This is a must stop and also a must stop again. Food was impeccable and the dessert was to die for. My husband won't stop talking about it. The bread pudding. It's perfection. The stroganoff with spaetzle was so creative and delicious. The sea bass was cooked perfectly with a crisp skin and was just delightful. Don't get me going on the actual serveware. It actually does matter and, they get it so right. Really, you must try this place.

A most pleasant meal top to bottom. We sat at the bar and had lovely service, was thrilled to see a Grüner from Austria on the wine menu! Delicious focaccia, a great salad and then a gorgeous main of sea bass.

A truly wonderful dining experience! The server, David, was outstanding in his explanations and recommendations. It was perfect for our date! I promise, we'll be back!

The food here was one of the best experiences in Saint Paul. I loved everything we got. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. Can’t wait to try the other side sometime. Seems like they have two separate restaurants. The service was great for valentine day. I think the owner was there and checked on everything.

Food and service were 5 stars. Only reason I’m giving 4 is because the chairs are horribly uncomfortable, and some are even damaged and are a safety hazard. I was in a chair that felt like it was made for a petite person, then asked to move. They kindly let me switch tables and chairs, but the chair I ended up on was broken and falling apart. If I was a heavy set person I’d worry about it breaking when I sat down, so the chairs are also a safety hazard. Please consider getting new chairs or fixing the existing ones. If that is corrected this is an easy 5 star review.Edit: I heard the couple next to me complaining about the chair he was on as well. It was the same one I started on, it is rounded and cuts into your butt and lower back and I’m a pretty narrow person to begin with.

We had a great dining experience on a Friday evening at Herbst. I booked early Friday afternoon and wanted an earlier reservation, so we took a spot at the Chef's Counter rather than wait until later for a table. You also have the choice of full service at the bar.The Chef's Counter turned out to be a fascinating choice. Essentially, you're sitting at the edge of the kitchen, in full view of the preparation of the food, which is a very interesting process. If anyone in your party has an interest in cooking, it's a great option. The service in that spot certainly lacked for nothing, either, and our server guided us expertly through the menu.Four courses - appetizer, salad, pasta, and main - are available with choices in each. We were advised, quite accurately, that one order in each course split between the two of us would be an ample meal. It certainly was! Portions were quite well sized for two people, and while I might have wanted more simply because the food was excellent, we were happy to leave very satisfied but not over-stuffed.The fresh, locally-sourced ingredients result in dishes that are bursting with flavor, and we had enough time between courses to savor each one before the next was ready. Plan on a leisurely 90+ minutes to dine, and you will count it time well spent. On your way out, check out the Farm Stand for everything from cookies to canned sauces to sauerkraut to beautiful stoneware by a local potter. All in all, Herbst is one of the best dining experiences we've had in quite some time and I would highly recommend it for a night out with someone special or for an occasion to remember. You won't regret it.
