The service, demeanor and professionalism of the staff was insulting and downright rude. If you don't want to read the entire experience below, I'll sum it up... We were in the restaurant a total of over an hour and a half and in that time, the reasons given that we never saw our food order was the fault of the other customers that didn't bother to make reservations, the customers on the patio because their parties were too large and mine because my steak was ordered med well. At no point did anyone in the establishment take responsibility. Their motto is to blame the customers for their poor attitudes and lack of service. This was my second time here as an adult (my parents brought me here a few times when I was younger) but it was the first time that the service was absolutely awful. We arrived for our 7:30 reservation when the hostess told us that our table wasn't ready and offered that we sit at the bar. After the bartender finally acknowledged my presence, I had asked for 2 waters. He seemed annoyed that we didn't order a "drink" however, my husband doesn't drink so the attitude was off-putting. After about 25 minutes of waiting we were shown to our table. Our waitress was pleasant at first, she took our drink order and we ordered an appetizer. After receiving our drinks, she didn't come back for almost 15 minutes to take our food order claiming that too many guests without reservations had come in at once making them busy. We finished our appetizer and continued to sit.... and sit some more..... and sit some more. Finally, an hour and a half after our reservation time, I stopped another waitress (because ours had been pretty much MIA) asking if I could speak to a manager. A few minutes later, a waiter claiming to be the floor manager, who made it very apparent that he was annoyed that he had to take the time to speak with us, asked what the problem was. I had indicated that everything was taking far longer than it should and we would just like for him to check on our food. He huffed that the patio became busy which backed up food orders. Note**We had already looked around and noticed that a couple of tables that were sat long after we were were already halfway through their meals. The "manager" then left the table saying he was going to check on our food. About a minute later, our waitress shows up and literally shoves a very rare, very bloody prime rib about 2 inches from my face indicating that the chef wanted us to have it. I expressed that we didn't want that, we wanted our steaks that we had ordered. Her response was "ma'am you ordered a medium well filet and that takes time". I responded that we had ordered our meal about 50 minutes ago and it doesn't take 50 minutes to cook a 6 oz filet... even if I wanted it charred. She then responded "you haven't been sitting here 50 minutes" she was right, by this point it was about an hour and then she continued with "would you like me to go check" in a very snarky, very condescending tone. I responded with "sure" in an equally condescending tone and she stormed off. We sat there another 5 minutes or so without any further interaction so we stood up and left. This will the the last time I step foot in this place. There are far too many other places in KC where you can get a good steak and not have to put up with slow and downright rude service.

Didn’t like that we were all stacked in on top of each other in a very small area. We were herded in like cattle and basically seated with the table beside us, although there was plenty of space to spread tables out. Both mine and my husband’s steaks were extremely under cooked and when we sent them back they came back charred and still undercooked. Salad was drowned in dressing. Baked potato was under cooked . Way, way over priced for the horrible dinner we were served. As a staple of the stockyards they should be embarrassed. Disappointed is an understatement! If I could give zero stars I would.

I had a reservation for 12 and they placed us in the KITCHEN! My fries was luke warm, which is surprising because we where in the KITCHEN!!! My steak was over cooked and three peoples steak at the table was under cook!! Gary our server and was GREAT!! He was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable!! I truly wish when I made the reservation they would have informed me that our seats would be in the KITCHEN!!! For the price we paid the food it was very mediocre!!!

I celebrated my Birthday here, which has been a family favorite for years, with my daughter. The food was absolutely delicious. They have a bar called "The Ox" which has parts of the original carpet and its scenic paintings. Great service! Best Birthday Ever!

Love my Dog

1. The service was great, but he spoke so fast it was hard to understand at times. He did seem knowledgeable and worked hard to make sure our order was perfect. I feel like he went out of his way to make up happy. Service was not the problem.
2. The building is pretty cool. It was so dark in there, I felt like an old lady (which I am not) using my phone as a flashlight. Is it dark so you can't see your disappointing dinner?
3. One of the specials was a filet with scallops, a baked potato and salad, which is what I got. The salad was very fresh and good. The blue cheese dressing was very tasty. The main course was dull. The presentation was sloppy and the food flavorless. A lot like high end geriatric food. I got my filet med. rare and it was cooked perfect, but tasted like sawdust. no seasoning or flavor. The bacon was limp and added nothing to the flavor. The scallops had no sear and looked like blobs of fat. The one small bite I had was gritty with a gelatinous texture. Just gross. I like a loaded baked potato to be just that. Cooked in an oven until the inside is soft and the peel is crunchy, then topped with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon and chives. Nope. Not at the Golden Ox. It was more like a boiled potato. No crunchy outside. Mushy on the inside with little butter or sour cream and chives. Maybe there was some cheese, but if so, I missed it.
4. At $350 for dinner, I expected more. I did eat part of it and took the rest home. It was such a mess in the box, I gave it to my dog. He love it.

This place is on the pricey side but so delicious and very historic. Everyone should visit at least once. Make sure to look at the many pictures of the old stockyards!

Great food, nice atmosphere, and excellent service. You can't go wrong with a steak, and the deserts are awesome.

Simply Amazing! Atmosphere was exceptional, our server was super nice and the food is “second to none”!

I had the crab cakes for an appetizer - wonderful. For the main dish, I had the filet with Tiger prawns that were perfectly cooked, and the Risotto which was not my favorite to be honest - a little acidic. Still, 5 stars for me.

Highly recommend for any date night for sure.

Well, Yelp actually got this one right. While Google reviews are over 4-stars, the 3.5 on Yelp is much closer to reality. When compared to all of the best steakhouses around the city, the Golden Ox falls short.

The filet was tasteless and every piece of meat at our table was cooked incorrectly. The best thing I ate was the one bite of ribeye I scrounged off someone else’s plate. Those who ate loaded mashed potatoes loved them and the dressing on the wedge was pretty good. The meal overall, however falls way short of what you could get at a place like Longhorn for a fraction of the price.

The price is excusable, though, if the service is top notch. Our was just Ok. It took over an hour to get our food after we ordered and I had to hunt down our server for steak sauce to try to salvage my steak.

So, for the experience it might be worth stopping in, but if you are looking for great food, there are many better options around the city.

Great historic place. Had a good cocktail. Service was not good. Food came out undercooked, cold and microwaved. No love…
