Having lived in St. Louis for many years, I'd driven by the Charcoal House hundreds of times. But, never had the opportunity to eat there. My spouse surprised me by making a birthday reservation. The restaurant is a friendly throw back to a by gone era. Picture walking into a nice steakhouse from the late 60's to early 70's. It's no frills, but very clean and well laid out. There's a nice sized bar to enjoy a cocktail if you have to wait. The menu is straight...
Excellent service, I had the Charcoal House Special, rare, with the mushroom sauce and blue cheese over the steak so it melted. If you're getting an expensive steak, get a fine wine to compliment it. I got the Jordan Cabernet, over $100 for the bottle but well worth it. (filet mignon)
My companion and I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience! We started with the escargot in mushroom caps which were absolute perfection. I had the beef tips with mushrooms and they were also cooked to perfection! My companion had a prime sirloin steak that was absolutely huge and he ate the whole thing because he said it was so good! We both had the twice baked potatoes which Charcoal House has always been famous for and they were delicious! The service was excellent, friendly...
