First time visiting El Potro, had the enchiladas with mole and 3 tacos dinner Al pastor and carne asada. Everything from the service to the food was great. The owner and staff are super nice!! Will definitely go back , next time will try the molcajete.

AUTHENTIC Mexican and Central American Cuisine! We really enjoyed eating at El Potro. I tend to judge a Mexican place by the chips and salsa they serve you when you sit down and the salsa and chips here did NOT disappoint. The salsa was fresh made and chips had great flavor. We started with Margaritas and Mojitos which were delicious. They have many drink options and the Mexcal Margarita had a lovely smokey flavor to it. They have an extensive menu of authentic dishes and between three of us we sampled the Fajitas Mix, Camaron a La Diabla (Shrimp in Spicy Red Sauce) and Tacos (Chicken, Carne Asada and their Special Campechana (mix of a variety of proteins). We finished with the Churros which came with a side of Strawberry Ice Cream. The churros were warm and crispy. The service was wonderful. Looking forward to going back. There is also a Mercado attached to the restaurant that was closed by the time we arrived for dinner but looks like it had lots of authentic food items for your home.Parking: This is in a strip mall and there seemed to be plenty of parking.

El Potro had great service, great food, and great Margs. The server was really nice and even topped off our margarita when it was getting low. It can be hard finding a great Mexican restaurant in Missouri, but El Potro is as authentic as it gets. Check it out!

The staff was very attentive. They had chips and salsa to our table before we even sat down. They were friendly with our kids and even topped off our margs after we took a few delicious sips. You can tell they like to take care of their customers. The food was much better than expected. The menu is Tex-mex and the food has a home cooked quality to it. For anyone crazing solid American Mexkcsn foods great margs, and fantastic service, this is your spot.

El Potro is the perfect Mexican restaurant for me. It is located in a strip mall in a working class area, has free chips, great margaritas, and authentic Mexican food. It has plenty of seating, a couple of big TVs on sports channels, offers free chips and spicy salsa, and has lively Texana music playing in the background. The chips were great, my Mole Chicken was fantastic, and my wife loved the steak quesadilla. It is worth mentioning that the quesadilla was grilled so that it was crispy, which is our favorite. I ordered a margarita and since the owner/host/manager made too much he kept refilling my glass with the surplus. I wouldn't expect this normally but it just goes to show the nice touch a locally owned and operated restaurant can give some extras vs the corporate places. My wife and I were staying at a downtown hotel, travelling for business. We drove out to El Potro to have this awesome food and experience. It was well worth the drive. In addition to my margarita, they had a full bar so they could probably mix you anything you want. One of the tables was having tequila shots, so if you're in the mood to celebrate, they've got you covered : ) El Potro is now saved in my bookmarks for every time I'm back in St Louis.

everything was excellent! the choriqueso dip was the best i've had in STL! our other food was just as yummy and the service and staff were amazing! will definitely be our new go to spot

My dad is from Mexico and I grew up in Texas, so I’m always hunting for Mexican restaurants in St Louis that actually season their food and don’t only have tacos. El Potro is my favorite so far! The vibe is very no-frills, but the staff is super nice and it’s good solid Mexican food that tastes authentic. I love going there for a torta and an agua de jamaica. And yes, the margaritas are good too.
