The Union Butcher Shop & Wood-fired Grill by Old Salt Co-op

It smells so good up the street. I'm going to dinner in the Gulch this evening in the Union. I will post pictures. Go Local.

7 people walked by before anyone acknowledged us. Waiter asked once over 90 minutes how things were going. Steaks came out thinly sliced on a room temp plate, so was already barely warm by the time it got to the table and was cold within minutes. So much opportunity but a very disappointing experience.

My family liked the restaurant, but the waiters were mean. Didn’t check on us even once. Only time was for the food and drinks. We ordered 4 steaks and then they gave us 2. And they were small. Like 5 inches I think. Then the food wasn’t even the way we wanted it all cooked. It was medium rare. We wanted it cooked easy. And the 2 steaks aren’t feeding 4 people, so I don’t think they can even count. And I wasn’t impressed. Two stars.

A wonderful addition to Helena. Interior design is perfect. Food was great (we got the short ribs, mashed potatoes, and fried onion). Went on a Wednesday with no reservations and had to wait maybe 10 minutes or so (ended up just grabbing seats at the bar). What would make the place better is cocktails.

Went a few minutes before 5 tonight and they couldn’t seat us until 6, maybe!Apparently, you need to make reservations! All the tables were empty. I can’t believe that all the tables were reserved for 5:00!Concerning that they were not interested in fitting us in.

Service was spot on, and they’ve only been open a short while! Simple menu (means it’s fresh and attention is being paid!), lovely wines, and I’m in love with the atmosphere.

Amazing!! My favorite part is knowing that we are supporting regenerative agriculture, doing our part for a better environment. A restaurant where we can eat humanely, locally raised animals, and food that is not sprayed with chemicals. I was also pleasantly surprised that they partnered with sunflower bakery which makes the best simple ingredient sourdough, and it is offered on the menu!We ordered a variety off the menu and everything was delicious! The beef fat fried onions were so yummy we ordered a second round. It’s so nice to know you can enjoy delicious food that is not fried in vegetable oil. The charred beet salad was so flavorful. The Hen of the woods Mushrooms is yummy and filling, and a perfect for a non-meat option. The Butcher’s Steak was a sirloin paired with rosemary and olive oil and was a perfectly cooked and beautifully served and pre-sliced. I would suggest offering it uncut so it will stay warmer when served, but it is a preference for some. We ordered all of the desserts. ? ? the S’Mores was my son’s favorite, marshmallow needed to be cooked a little longer so it can melt, but it was delicious. The carrot cake was fantastic, moist and not too sweet. And the huckleberry shaved ice is a refreshing. Menu suggestions would be to add a couple signature mixed drinks. They didn’t have children’s selection on the menu, but they did accommodate us with a beef hotdog on request.We had dinner at a very busy time, but we did not wait long for our food. For the first week of opening they are doing very well with their service, I’m sure they are still working out some kinks. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be regulars here. I Love that Helena has a local farm to table restaurant with a healthy variety to choose when dining out.

Butcher counter is excellent and extremely clean/nice looking. Meats to buy for home are fantastic. Breakfast sandwiches great tasting and great price and good coffee.The dinner we had there was plated beautifully however almost our whole table agreed that their dishes were so salty to the point you could only eat so much before feeling a little dehydrated. I hope they fix this as their meat is so tasty it doesn’t need too much salt! Service staff was still getting the hang of things so they gave some of us another tables sides and asked us a few times if what they had in their hands was for us, definitely wouldn’t fault them for this as it was their second day opened so I’m sure that’s why! Overall beautiful space. I’m not sure id have dinner here on a regular basis but for sure would sit at the bar for a glass of wine.

We ate here the third night they were open. The service was great and fast. The food was fresh and excellent. Great atmosphere Our new favorite spot in town.

First class restaurant with excellent service. The food was amazing, our entire group enjoyed and loved the new vibe in Helena. Long overdue. Great to have a locally owned and operated restaurant with Montana sourced products. Grabbed some steaks at butcher shop on way out. Epic.

We ate late last night and some of the items on the menu were out, but what we did order was good. They're new so not going to care much about that. The atmosphere is excellent, the wait staff was wonderful and my wife and I had a nice time. I'm glad Helena has the Union as a dining choice. I'm sure it will only get better.

Delicious. Love the flavor from the wood fired grill. Love the fact that it’s all Montana meats. They have a butcher shop right in the restaurant. The beef tallow onion petals did not disappoint.
