What a great place for a family celebration! All the seafood was fabulous, especially the fried Calamari, but I must say I had the world’s greatest Greek Salad and Pita! Wonderful hidden gem in the Chapel Hill area! Waite staff took care of kids with excellent care. Taking their order before everyone else and they were eating and enjoying themselves while everyone else enjoyed fellowship. Definitely will make this a usual place for dinner and celebrations when visiting my family in Chapel Hill!
A friend came to town to visit and I suggested we go to Dockside for dinner. What a great place! The food was awesome. The prices were very fair. The service and atmosphere was top tier! We sat in the newly re-opened dining room next to a cozy fireplace. By the time we were finished with dinner, we were brainstorming on ways we can plan an event back in the tiki bar area!
Excellent salt and pepper catfish. May be the best in North Carolina
This place and the food are not the same as I remember. The food that I ordered was just ok.

Not everyone has more than $5 or more to tip a take out cashier. The food is good but the cashier at the take out area was rude to mock the amount of tip received for one bowl of clam chowder to her coworker.
Especially since she was training the coworker and let the customer hear everything she said.

Forget the funky parking lot setting, you'll feel like you're at the ocean! Amazingly fresh seafood, perfectly cooked. Great service. Highly recommend.

Close this place down Sam!! Disgusting entryway with dirty fish tank and random storage items in dining room. Staff at bar not friendly. We need a decent place to eat in Cole Park. Tear it down. It's run down inside and out. A huge eye sore.
Food was delicious

Some friends and I enjoyed a delicious dinner at Captain John’s Dockside last night! My broiled scallops were perfectly done, and everyone in our group loved their dinners too (fried jumbo shrimp, catfish, broiled jumbo shrimp). Even the salad was commendable - fresh and crisp. We dove into the complimentary hush puppies that were brought to us as we viewed the menus, then snacked on the crisp and tasty clam strips. The place was shiny-clean, and the service was delightful. We’re looking forward to going back soon with more of our friends!

Disappointed! We went early about 6 pm on a Saturday. The dining room was condensed to the bar area where we had to listen to a bunch of old drunk men use "G D & FK" every third word! The seafood is frozen and low quality at best! The flounder filet was broiled but rubbery and smelled fishy. Flounder is not a fishy fish, that's why I like it! The fried popcorn shrimp was standard but good! The fried clam strips were cold, and the devil crab tasted freezer burnt!! My husband had the tuna steak he liked it. They actually cooked it quite well to a medium liking. The slaw was nasty, and our baked potatoes were over baked- hard on the outside. The hush puppies were very good if you like onions. My Greek salad was ok with some brown pieces of lettuce and the olives with the pit in them; glad I didn't break a tooth!! The building needs an update, and the food left a lot to be desired! We will not be returning. The owners did seem like nice people. I'm pretty sure she was tending bar, and he was in the kitchen. The menu online is not their menu, so no blooming onion or crab dip!!

We enjoyed an evening of great food and music at Captan John’s Dockside. The place was very busy but the service was great.
Kid-friendliness: We had our 8 yr old granddaughter with us. She enjoyed the music and ate everything on her plate.

Just don't go!!!! I am not sure if Captain John's has changed owners or what, but it is definitely not the same service, food or atmosphere it has been known for all these years. The main nice dining area is closed. You are instead corralled into a bar area where you are seated at a rickety 4 chair card table. The server was rude...maybe was tired. We took a look around and decided to just leave. And I'm so glad we did.We instead went 2 stores over to Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant.....where we were met with kindness, excellent food, and actual real dining seating. I highly recommend them.We have been a patron of Captain John's for 18 or 20 yrs.....but we won't be back.
