Okay so I never really do reviews.
But this one deserves a review.
The Basil Pizza that I got was so wonderful exceptional heavenly delicious.
Absolutely perfection.
And they have really excellent cake.
The price of sky high though.
However you have to pay for quality right....
And every penny is worth it.
They do not mess around on their pizza and the quality of their ingredients and the quality of their bread.
Heavenly perfection I will continue to eat there.

The staff is wonderful and will help you decide on a sub. They greet you with a smile, the Philly cheese was excellent and so was the tuna

American hero always has fresh bread, and fresh sandwiches! Doesn’t matter which sandwich you choose they are alll amazing, tuna or Philly cheesesteak are my personal favorites! 10/10

Youd be nuts to go to Subway across the street. Great subs here

I'm a native upstate New Yorker, and if you're looking for a traditional hoagie from the region -- this is it. They fresh cut meat and cheese right in front of you, bread is all fresh baked in-house, and they have macaroni salad. What else could you want? It's a bit rundown, but the sandwiches are killer. Since moving to Durham, I am there once a week at least.

If you don't eat meat, highly recommend getting a cheese sandwich, toasted -- and rolling with whatever jokes these Greek guys throw at you. Part of the charm.

The food was over priced in my opinion. For the size and meat amounts and the selection for toppings. I remember going regularly to the American hero in Loris SC. They had decent sizes and were more filling. The inflation must have made a difference in the portions of meat.

Really unsure how this place has 4.6 stars
which is what drew me to it on my way up 85. For the price, you can get a much better sandwich at a place that doesn’t feel like it is falling apart and in need of a major facelift. Sandwich was mostly bread (and not good bread). Everything else felt cheap. I hate to knock a small business, but I could get a much better version of the same sandwich at Jersey Mike’s and might even pay a little less. Disappointed I didn’t try somewhere else in town.

This place used to be so delicious back in the day, but has since fallen off! I stopped in today (2/7/25) only because my bf works not far from there. I was flabbergasted by everything around me.
For starters, it was lunch time and absolutely no one was in there at first. The place has a funny odor and the bathroom looked and smelled gross. Furthermore, the dining area was clean to the eye, but didn't feel clean! There are old dusty ceiling fans, ancient arcade games, and a bizarre horse ride machine that gave me the creeps! There was also an old lady just sitting in the dinning room just staring and looking very unpleasant our entire visit! Weird...very weird!
Me and my bf decided to order the the giant steak and cheese and share it.
We made it a combo. At first, the older man on the register rang us up for 2 giants instead of 1..making the total over $40!! Then I told him that it was only one sandwich and the price with the chips and drinks went down to $27. Once my bf handed him the card to pay, the did something to jack the price back up to like $36. I instantly felt like they were trying to play us. I told the man that if he could not break down the price of what we ordered, then he can just canceled it! He re-rang everything and the price went back to $27, which was still very much overpriced for what we actually got.

The veggies did not look or taste fresh, the bread was kinda chewy like, the mayo is nasty, and to add insult to injury, they have the nerve to charge for banana peppers and pickles! Also they charge u half price for refills on fountain drinks!!

The meat was flavorless!!! The entire sandwich felt like I would have been better off eating cardboard!! I felt completely uncomfortable dinning there and will never go back there!

American Hero makes a great sandwich, and the staff are friendly. The meat was fresh cut, and I really enjoyed it.

The restaurant itself could use some renovations/deep cleanings, but the food prep area was very clean, which is the most important I reckon.

I would also like to see an expanded garden section available; there wasnt much variety to the available toppings. The bread could also use an improvement. I would really like to see turkey, ham, and roast beef as a menu item. It's a bummer to have to pay 17 dollars (due to the extra charge) for a sandwich to get that combination of meats that are stapled at others delis.

Overall, the sandwiches here are really good and staff were great, but there is room for improvement in other areas.
