I brought my children here when they were 4 or 5. Now they are 51, 46, 43, and 38. The service, food, and atmosphere brought back so many wonderful memories. The restaurant has progressed beautifully while keeping all of the past alive.

Carol is great at the bar!

This classic Southern joint seems to be packed all year, regardless of beach season or not! Warm welcome, military and veteran discount, super friendly smiling waiters and waitresses! Ours was a superstar super pretty waitress, with an art museum's worth of tatts on her arms, a smile on her face, and always checking up on her tables. We were there for breakfast and were not disappointed! I had eggs, corned beef hash, pancakes, and grits (of course!). It was huge, and I couldn't believe how affordable! Also had a side of hush puppies, which were delicioso! They also have a full bar on the premises, and there's plenty of free parking off the main drag on Nags Head.

Walked into restaurant at about 11am on New Year’s Day. Didn’t see Host or Hostess, but myself and my husband noticed an older Caucasian male cashier checking a customer out at the cash register, so we approached that area. Once he finished assisting the lady, my husband approached him and said, “Excuse me, we need to check in”. The older Caucasian male responded, “Ok” and immediately turned away from us to check in a Caucasian Female and we overheard him tell her that there was about a 20-25 minute wait. A female waitress/hostess approached the older Caucasian male. We waited patiently expecting that the older Caucasian male would turn around to assist us. But to our dismay, the older Caucasian male called two other guest parties to inform them that their tables were ready. We stood waiting for the cashier to turn around to acknowledge us but he NEVER did. This was so very embarrassing as others looked on. He actually totally ignored us and proceeded to check in another Caucasian guest. As an African American, it was so very obvious that African Americans are not welcomed at this establishment. We were unfairly treated as we arrived before the Caucasian party. The older Caucasian male’s actions made it very clear that we African Americans were second to the Caucasian Guests, despite arriving before them. It’s 2024, and the older Caucasian male made it very clear that African Americans are not welcomed at the Dunes Restaurant. I rarely do reviews but this one was needed to WARN other African Americans and any other people of color to take your money elsewhere. It’s a shameful disgrace to be treated this way in 2024!!! And it was extremely embarrassing as other guests witnessed this disgusting and disheartening interaction. WARNING - PEOPLE OF COLOR - YOU ARE NOT WELCOMED AT THIS PREJUDICE AND RACIST RESTAURANT.

I've been going to the dunes since I was a child. It's one of the great bastions of the Outer Banks. The food is good. The service is always friendly, and sometimes kind of humorous. The prices are good. You might have to wait a bit sometimes for a seat. The place is in high demand. Is it absolutely amazing? No, but it's dependably good every single time!On a personal note, some of the best hot cakes on the outer Banks! They serve them in the old Al Van Curen style . It's a local thing. If you know you know.

We love eating at this cute restaurant, usually on our last day on the OBX. The menu has great breakfast and brunch options which do not disappoint. This last visit was quick and food was great. The service was quick this time -- we've never had bad service here though. I'd definitely recommend getting here before 9 a.m., though, especially on the weekends. If you're renting a place and have to be out by 10 a.m., The Dunes is a great place to get breakfast if you can't cook in your rental! They also have a cute gift shop area.

The food was absolutely terrible and honestly made us all feel sick after eating it. It tasted like glorified cafeteria food. The coffee was basically water. We had called ahead to see if there was a wait and they told us there wasn’t, but when we got there around 2 minutes later, we had to wait 20 minutes for a table. The bathrooms didn’t have almost any actual soap, just a salt scrub. Overall a very poor experience and I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone. The only reason the service has more than one star is because our waitress was amazing and super kind. She was the only saving grace for this restaurant.
